Has anyone installed the remote start (H001SXC001) themselves?

I'm toying around with the idea of doing this installation in the driveway to save on labor...has anyone gone down this path before? I'd imagine it would probably be about two hours at the dealership. Seems like the glovebox needs to be removed. Thanks!

Double check your part number to insure you are purchasing the correct part number for your vehicle...the fob-based remote start has two versions. One for Subaru's with push-button start and one for Subaru's with key start. Of course push-button start Ascents can also use the Starlink subscription model for remote start from your smartphone with more features without installing hardware.

SUPER simple, but you cannot finish the job yourself. A Subaru dealership (or an aftermarket shop with a Subaru Select Monitor v4 - which are next to none), needs to finish the install by registering the unit, and all the FOBs, with the remote start unit.

Thanks for the responses. I'm happy this is driveway doable, and no worries I'll chat with my local service team once the hardware is installed. I'll be sure to order the push-start version for my particular vehicle. Might not be done as soon as I'd like - but now it's on my to-do list for sure. I'll keep you updated!

I installed it myself about 6 months ago shortly after I got our ascent. Definitely DIY. Only difficulty I remember having was finding the location of screws to remove the glove box mount and getting it lined up.

All in I don’t think it could have taken more than 45 minutes. I had the dealer registration process already printed out in hand for the dealer tech so it was probably under 5 minutes for them to program.

I am currently in the process of purchasing a used 2019 Subaru Ascent Touring. I came across this page when researching the various remote start methods for this vehicle. I currently own a 2019 WRX (no remote start) and a 2019 Crosstrek Limited w. Starlink Remote Start. I am fairly familiar with the MySubaru method to utilize the Starlink Subscription for remote start. I even had an iPhone shortcut working for a while to start the Crosstrek by navigating to mysubaru.com and a ID# with preset username/pswd combo. Subaru must have changed something with the website because that not longer works. I say all this to show I have a decent amount of experience with remote start.

My question for this thread is: Can you DIY the remote start module and not bring it to the dealer for the FOB pair and use the two FOBs that come with your vehicle? The ones that lock/unlock and open the hatch. (3 clicks of the lock button with the 3rd click being held to initiate the remote start)

Based on what I have read in other threads it seems as if you can use already paired FOBs without pairing the single purpose remote start FOB that comes with the module. This is my understanding when reading through that thread.

On another note I also read that you may be able to get this done free if you play dumb and say it quit working when you bring it in for the next oil change. May sound dishonest but $300 seems like a ripoff. Me personally if I can DIY the module install and use the FOBs that come with the vehicle for when cell reception is poor, I would be happy.

on my 2021 the remote start box needs to be registered with the vehicle even if you want to start it via the factory fobs.

It takes under 5 minutes to be registered, any shops that frequently work on Subarus (aka have ssm4) and even some locksmiths can also do it so you very well could sweet talk them into it.

If you search around the internet you can get a copy of ssm4 (I believe I found instructions on the forester forums….) and do it yourself, but you’ll still need to purchase an obd2 adapter.

How do you program all the FOBs to the BIU unit, and program the remote start unit to the BIU? So far, I've heard a number of people say they can do that, but not a single one ended up actually being able to do it without an SSMv4.

The module, and the remote fob, and the regular fobs? That's new. It didn't a couple years ago when I bought mine. That's good to know.

Yep, but programming a FOB is different than registering the remote start engine control module.

Many tools can add FOBs.

That's awesome! If "immobilizer" is the same as the remote start module, that's wonderful news. That opens up the door to a lot cheaper programming.

5 years of StarLink that includes remote start purchased at the same time as a new Subaru or within a short window is $248.

Thank
That's because your dealer failed to tell you about the other options. You had the choice of 3, 4 or 5 years at the discount rate. 3 years is great...if you lease...but not if you buy and intend to hold the vehicle longer. I had a 7 year on my MY19, but 6 and 7 years were removed from the program while back. (and yes, I got a pro-rate refund when I traded the MY19 for the MY23 not quite two months ago)
Thanks for the info. I remember asking if there were longer term but that’s what I was told. I don’t use the remote start often and find it screws up the temperature settings between driver and passenger. If someone knows how to keep those settings in remote start let me know. I even consider buying the hardwired remote start.

Use one of the climate control presets (you can even make your own). I select a preset to start the car, instead of just using the app to start.

Hi all. Thank you for sharing information about the remote start system. I am taking a risk posting to this "old" thread but anyone else who finds it like I did may benefit if someone has an answer to my additional questions.

We purchased a 2021 Ascent (Touring) a year ago. The remote start was a must-have, as we have no garage. We decided to give the app a try instead of having the push-button option installed but have found that our phones are not always in hand when we want to start the car whereas our key fobs are. It's very convenient to press one button and forget it versus finding a phone, negotiating connections, opening an app, authenticating, verifying settings, ..
We also occasionally find ourselves in a location (think mountain cabin) where getting into a warm car is desirable but there is no network connectivity

I gather that adding the fob-initiated remote-start requires installation of additional hardware to the car but I don't understand why. The car has the ability to perform all the necessary functions to be remotely started. It also has the ability to communicate with the remote key fob. What additional functionality is needed?? Is there a way to make this work without the additional installation?

If not, are there any updates on how to complete the "registration" process for the newly installed module without unnecessarily enriching our local dealership?

Thanks in advance for sharing your expertise.

Hi guys I was able to install and register my remote start on my 2021 Ascent Limited. I used my Autel IM508 to do it and it was success. The Install was not hard it was pretty easy to do. The only issue I had with it was Registering the remote start unit. The instruction say to have the Ignition on, but when I tried it with the ignition on it didn't work. The engine must be running for it to successfully work. Now I got remote start for my ascent and is ready for the snowy winter.
