Has anyone had this happen before?
Not a common issue, but the nature of electronics and computers is that sometimes during a software/firmware upgrade, somethings goes amiss and stuff gets "bricked". They will take care of you.

Yes, once in a blue moon, a TCU or ECM gets bricked during an update. Once that's resolved, they will complete the recall, and, if they find slipping or broken chain guide or other physical damage, they will replace the CVT.

That's what I figured... we coming up on about two weeks. Had to get stuff out of the car today, it was pushed further back in the wrecked lot 🙃 so I plan to give them a call today and see what the plan is.

Hi to All,

I have ASCENT in Europe in Czech Republic :) I was already posted in this link about WRK21 recall action. I´ll describe my experience with this recall here in Europe.
I have to say that this was not so easy and sometimes even quite complicated and stress.
I have my ascent MY2020 and everything was OK till situation I want to change gear box fluid in 60.000 km (approx 37.500 ml) - I know that there is whole life fluid, but I have my experiences with CVT from Outback MY2017 where fluid change was offered by my service and it was feelable. Than we found that fluid for the high torque version of my transmission isn´t released in the EU. so that was the first point.
after that I found that there is recall WRK21 an tried to discuss it with service. Several month like 9 month nothing happened. After that I found necessary documents here in this link on forum and sent it to my service. till this moment they had nothing. Than there was 3 tryouts to change the software in the CVT with, as they told me physical check of the chain - but here I know that they didn´t do that :). Every time when service changed software there was some change in the behavior of CVT and other symptoms appears like slipping of the chain (which is like when you have car with manual gear box and when you are driving on the highway for example you are pressing on the clutch for a second, or when you are starting and turning thar was quite strong kicks like from the back of the car and hearable drum sounds . At the beginning there was vibration with the chain slippage in the spectrum from 2.000 rpm till 3.000 rpm, after change of the software this spectrum where was most of the slippage of chain and vibration moved to lover rpm like from 1.500 – 2.000. And after next software change vibration and slippage appear during fist gear simulation change. Symptoms with kicking and drum sounds mainly when I´m parking was increasing too.
Only to explain why I decided to change a fluid in 60k km, because there was really some small vibration from time to time and as I pointed out before I had good experiences with change in my Outback.
Nevertheless next approx. 6 month I was discussing with my service because they told me that there are no problems on my car related to the recall action. So I made a short analysis with my service where I used all documents I get from here (and even sent to service) and during this arguing got an information that when I will be able to show them that there is some slippage of the chain they cover new CVT.

So appointment in service was made and I want from them to go to the test drive together with me when computer was connected to the car. Techie told me that when I feel that there is slippage I have to told him and he mark it in the recording of the CVT data.

During cca 20 min test ride there was directly at the beginning 1 small slippage where techie told me that he isn´t even able to recognize some small slippage only about 100 rpm etc. we continued with our test drive and during these 20min we had like 8 slippages and some of them was about 700 rpm etc.

After this test drive they told me in my service that in every case I marked there was a slippage of the chain which was visible on the record from the CPU. So they´ll told me that I´ll get a new CVT which was agreed with Japanese headquarter. With waiting time 3 – 5 month for new CVT.

This happened ca 1 month ago and I got an information last week that CVT have to be deliver in 1 week and we made already an term in the service for the next week to proceed with change of CVT.

It wasn´t so easy and I have to say at the end of this story thnx to my service and SUBARU of Czech Republic we have even this solution.

Because I was trying to proceed with this recall action in Germany and even in Sweden and in any of these country they even didn´t discussed with me.

One point to everybody I have already nearly like 140k km ( approx..87.500 ml) and it is still working.

So I´ll see how it will pass next week in the service and try to do even update after that.

Quite a story, sorry it took so long but it appears that a proper resolution is at hand. Here in the US, CVT replacements are much easier, the main hold-up is the shortage of units. Hopefully, that is resolved by now.
