it is quite distracting... But with small trailer (i cant see in my mirrors ) it is helpful too..

 

Very cool! Gotta try this. Yes would be great for monitoring cargo on my flat bed trailer (which I can't see in the rear/side mirrors).

My GMC Canyon had a button that would turn the rear camera on for 8 secs while you were driving. It was a handy feature!

 

I used this last week while towing an 18' trailer. Helpful when I started out (kept wondering if the ball was still on... noob tow driver!). And then I got rear ended, and so it was helpful to know that the ball lock was still working (not a noob any more, just needed reassurance!).

Oh, and it's really helpful when backing up to the ball. If I needed to come forward a smidge, the rear view would stay on the screen even when not in Reverse.

This set of menus is good to monitor oil temp too, helpful in my first long drive towing.

Is it only for certain Trims? I tried it on my Premium trim, but no response.
Am I missing any pre steps?

 

I got it to work on the premium trim. I would try with two hands, i found with one i tended to spin the tuning knob instead of pressing it.

 

Would this be helpful when carrying a large item in the rear cargo area that blocks the driver from using the windshield rear-view mirror?

 

Maybe yes maybe no. It’s a wide view so objects are much closer than they appear to be. It’s better than no view at all though!

I tried this today in my Premium model and it worked.Cool to know there’s a hidden menu easily accessible ,a lot helpful info there.For one you can see the battery’s voltage reading,quite entertaining this hidden menu is.

 

I'm shocked that I'm the first one to figure this out (maybe I'm not?)

Someone mentioned recently about the service menu:
Hold the home button for a few seconds, and while holding it, tap the tune knob twice
you can do it with one hand if you start with your thumb on the home button

Not a whole lot of stuff here, voltage reading, general diagnostics. careful with that speaker test button! don't press it with anyone else in the car!

Once there, choose the camera setting menu, then scroll to the bottom, and choose camera setting

This looks like a menu to make adjustments to the grid lines but it can be open any time (you can see in my photo that I'm in park)

In the menu you can also turn off all of the lines if you're using it to monitor a trailer or something (the most useful way I can think of to use this)

It's a little trippy to see while driving though and quite distracting. use at your own risk


Now if only there was a way to record it....
