Hi Fred

Front to rear rotation on the Ascent (on any Subie) is very important. AWD Subarus are never left->right rotation without moving forward. The reason is suspension geometry and how it affects tire wear.

Front tires move directly to the rear. If NOT directional tires, the rear tires criss-cross to the front (Rear left becomes front right, rear right becomes front left). If directional, they just move forward on the same side. RR->RF, LR->LF).

Reinstall position of the snow tires potentially matters for up to three reasons:
  1. for proper position in a rotation cycle (eg: they had 500 miles in the previous rotation cycle, so you should be using them for 5,500 more miles in the previous positions for proper wear.
  2. if they're directional (left must go back on left, at the least)
  3. if you have cloned sensors and don't have the ability to re-register tire positions (2019, 2020).
Robert I appreciate your information although i find it confusing. I don't understand what you mean by unidirectional tires versus non unidirectional tires. my winter tires have a tad over 5,000 miles on them. I'm not sure where they were put back on the car versus where they came off. My bad, I suppose. Could you clarify your information for me?

I have 32,000 miles on mine and while there's legal tread left, quite a bit actually, I have felt, driving in the rain at freeway speeds, some hydroplaning. Ordered a set of Michelin CrossClimate2 from COSTCO to be installed next week some time. Mostly bought those because I enjoy skiing and they have a good rating for snow. $951.03 for a set of 4 installed and balanced out the door. ($120 off coupon)

My opinion of the OEM tire is rather high though. They worked well in snow for two seasons and I get great fuel milage. I have a Thule ski box on the roof and drove 550 miles each way from Tahoe to San Diego for Thanksgiving, setting the cruise control for 80mph (and regularly reaching that speed surprisingly due to light traffic) and hand calculating the mileage at 28.3mpg.

On another note, I was very impressed that the well loaded Ascent did the Grapevine while easily holding 80mph on the climb up each direction.
I hope these new Michelins have as good a mileage range, fuel economy and as little road noise as these OEM Falkin tires.

My OEM Falkens just failed the state safety exam at ~24,500 miles. I'll probably get a set of the CrossClimate2 based on reports in these forums. Are there typically any tire sales as we approach the end of the year or did I miss my shot at the black Friday deals?

Like everything else, there are shortages. Tires are no exception. I got mine from Costco with $150 off as posted in the thread just prior to yours. Checking this morning, they are out of stock and no idea when they will get them back in. My tires were 2 weeks after I placed my order on November 20th before shipped from HUSTON to SACRAMENTO. They arrived in Sacramento today and expected to be at my Costco by tomorrow. I then logged onto Costco and set up the tire install appointment. First available date is Sunday, December 19th at 9am. That's a little over 4 weeks from order to install. Keep that in mind when purchasing tires; even if they say they will sell you a set, which Costco isn't doing at my local store right now anyway, it still will take at least a month to get them installed. And figure things are going to get harder, not easier in the future.
Good luck!

Thanks SkiPro. The Costco website claims I can order them to arrive at the store in 7-10 days, but my local Discount Tire has 5 in stock so think I'll just schedule an appointment with them. My vehicle registration is due by 12/31 so gotta pass that safety inspection first. (I paid for the inspection during my 36 month service today so the follow-up to check to fix is free, but the service manager says I'll have to pay 85 cents when I return for the state sticker)

Good plan. I wouldn't trust an order this month with all the shipping and inventory issues going on plus the appointment for install.
BTW, I called my Costco to see if they could fit me in sooner. When they picked up, they asked if I could hold, they had a customer at the desk. No problem. When he got back to me, I asked if there was any way to get these sooner. He said the guy he put me on hold for cancelled and I can get them day after tomorrow installed! It pays to call and talk nice.
Merry Christmas!
