Finally had time to install my dashcam in my 2019 Ascent Limited. Used a Dongar 10-pin usb adapter that plugs into the 10-pin port at the stem of the auto dimming rear view mirror. Also got an adapter that clamps the dashcam to the back of the rear view mirror for less footprint. Now to find a shorter USB type C cable.

The best dash cams are Blackvue and Thinkware. Viofo is also a great option if you don't want to spend as much. I install Blackvue's in all of my vehicles and have for years. Best app in the industry too with full cloud capability if you're interested. I have also been a professional installer for over 40 years.

I installed this item on my 2019 Outback: Dash Cam Front and Rear 4K,... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CBBT3CXY?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share With the available mounting kit : Dash Cam Hard Wire Kit for... Amazon.com: Dash Cam Hard Wire Kit for FOCUWAY T5/ T5 Pro/ T6/ T6E Model, 4 Meter Dashboard Camera Car Charger Cable Kit 12V- 24V to 5V, Power Adapter with LP/Mini/ATO/Micro2 Fuse for Dash Cam : Electronics installation was easy. I found 2 empty slots in the fuse box , one with switched 12 power and one with constant 12v power. The wires tucked in nicely under the rubber trim, all the way to the rear hatch. The only issue was where to tuck the excess length of wire. Looking at our 2019 Ascent Touring, I could see that installation would be similar.

You can see my review on Amazon under “El Supremo”.

If they like this kind of stuff -or "like adjacent" (my daughter was -and continue to remain- big into FIRST Robotics. She did Electrical and Programming as a lowerclassman, and eventually was Systems Lead/Programming Co-Lead, and Driver in her senior year) it's a great little project.

The relative technical ease and straightforward nature of a modern dash cam install is a perfect place to get them involved, and if they're good at it, it's an awesome way to earn some extra cash as a side-hustle or to even bridge into a real summer/part-time job at a local install shop.

No prob! Epic fun! Glad I could help!

It's truly an excellent community with a lot of good people - and one that really comes forward to help out: just like you did!!!! 😅

As with a lot of Subaru communities, this one is replete with technical knowledge and expertise. You'll find a lot of us who started with Subarus in their 30s or even 20s, who have "aged up" through the marque's offerings and are now in an Ascent. I still recognize several handles/screen-names from NASIOC and LegacyGT.com here.

Yes...but the key point surrounding the use of the adapter is you get no Parking Mode. If you're cool with that, then that's great. However, most accidents actually take place in parking lots when you're not there to witness it. Hence, the importance of parking mode. To each their own, but if the cameras have the option for parking mode, which all do, why not leverage it??? Just my 2 cents.
