Does anyone know definitively if the 2019 Ascent supports wireless Apple CarPlay? I know some cars do. Within Settings in my iPhone (iOS 13) it just says that is you have a car/model that supports wireless Apple CarPlay long press the "push to talk" button. When trying to test it out, long pressing the "push to talk" button does nothing. Well, actually it it does bring up Siri (it does this while my phone is unplugged from the USB ). But nothing else happens. Any definitive comments would be greatly appreciated.

No.
Neither the MY19 or MY20 support wireless CarPlay unfortunately. The long press of the voice button you described is the only way to interact with Siri wirelessly

I guess a follow-up question...would a software or firmware update to either car or iPhone to make CarPlay wireless be possible, or requires some hardwire or cabling change in the car? Kinda seems if BT is already working and you can talk with Siri, that you're more than halfway there?

No. It requires hardware to support. Wireless CarPlay and AndroidAuto do initial connection via BT, but the actual mirroring, etc., is done by dedicated "WiFi". And no, that's not via the current WiFI hot spot capability. Very few vehicles support wireless CarPlay and AndroidAuto at this point, although the list is starting to grow...slowly. The way that Apple and Google designed the wireless side of things is, um...complicated.

Can you elaborate? I’ve heard of wireless adapters that work on android based head units, but that wouldn’t be the case for the Ascent.

There are a few "dongles" that purport to provide wireless CarPlay to wired only CarPlay head units. The one I checked out yesterday after first viewing denissh's post appeared to be a very nice product, but Subaru was not on the list of tested vehicle manufacturers.

Thanks. I hadn’t seen those yet! Someone’s gonna have to spend $170 to test it for us!
I think those are literally a work in progess with some mixed results. I casually read up on CarPlay news and I think those units get vetted for specific vehicles as time passes. It looks like the company is active with updates (and may rely on customer feedback). I haven't done the research to see if it has been working in Subarus.

I've read the head unit needs 5 Ghz wifi to support the bandwidth necessary for reliably streaming what it is basically streaming video from the phone.

Subaru uses the voice button to talk to the the Starlink multimedia unit. You are asking for problems trying to override that function.

my 19 ascent doesn’t support wireless Apple play. I always have to plug in usb cable for it to work. Advantage is it keeps your phone charged.

I emailed carplay2air about wireless CarPlay for our Subaru here is their response.

Hello,

Thanks for your interest to our product!

We are happy to let you know that we are now in the process of completing the test of our adapter with multimedia systems.

The test of our engineering team is still ongoing for your car brand.

No worries! I will let you know right away once we are done with the test.

Thank you,

2.4 can stream 3-4 x4k video at the same time and 15+ 1080p ..
On paper, maybe, but most of the 2.4 Ghz wifi implementations aren't great. 802.11b is only 11 Mbit max. 802.11g sounds like it would do the job since the spec nominally supports 54 Mbit, but in reality its limited to 31 Mbits effective throughput. 802.11n is the only really viable choice at 2,4Ghz, but you're still capped around well under 70 Mbits with a single radio channel.

Really, the 5 Ghz requirement is there not just for simple bandwidth but because of less interference in the 5 Ghz band, both from other wifi base stations and Bluetooth. I'm sure it could have been made to work at 2.4 Ghz, but it would have been poor from a reliability perspective.

I also think its a means of getting more CPU horsepower in the head unit by association, if you will. Any SoC implementation used in the head unit that supports 5 Ghz wifi is also likely to have reasonably good computing power, which also increases reliability/responsiveness. So many car head units have absolute garbage computing power in them, and much of this was spec developed years ago, too, when it was even worse than now.

The TL;DR is that CarPlay probably could have "worked" at 2.4 Ghz, but it would have been glitchy and slow and vendors would have shoehorned it onto sub-par head unit technology, resulting in a lot of consumer griping. Apple made 5 Ghz a standard for basic reliability for reasons beyond basic bandwidth math.

My 10 years old laptop can do 80-100Mbps from internet over 2.4 and 6 years old phone can do 60+ too and it’s 2 rooms away from router
4K stream is only 15-25 and 1080p is only 4-7
CarPlay is not 1080 .. and I dont see any reason why it will we based on video streaming ..
Maps don’t need it and the rest apps only 1-2 times per second at most
And as it’s not video stream you will only update section of screen needed update not a whole screen
