Upsizing the skinny spare?

Anyone with lift and larger tires upsize their skinny spare to match the diameter of the new ones?

I have a full size spare that will be on a hitch carrier for trips, but day to day it would be nice to have a taller skinny spare tire under the SUV.

You pretty much have to, otherwise, you'll destroy a differential.

I'm debating between a hitch mount or cargo basket for the roof. If I do that, I'll put the donut back underneath to maintain the impact absorption.

I haven’t upsized yet, have 6k miles on Terraincontacts. Ideally I’d go 30.5 if no rubs on the lift.

The plan was to stick the full size in a cargobox for aero but don’t like the idea of trying to balance that much weight while I’m balancing off the door sill.

If I don’t find a compact spare in 30.5 I might just stick to Oem sizing
This Goodyear Compact Spare looks like it will work when I go 30.5 (265/60/18) and don't end up sticking a full size spare underneath

Ok.....definitely going with the full size spare at these prices. I don't think I've ever paid that much for a tire, and I've had wide max performance summer tires

OMG that's crazy.
$316 for the tire...with no wheel...

But to confirm, if we don't mind spending the $316 on that larger Goodyear "donut", will it fit on our existing Ascent donut rim? (if so, I believe its still cheaper that a new fullsize tire and wheel).

Came across This Image of an Ascent with a regular sized spare tire. The car has also been lifted with improved suspension...

You'd need to compare the tire and wheel specifications to determine that.

I'm pretty confident it will, since the vehicle in the picture linked is owned by [email protected] Subaru, and he runs a much larger than OEM size (I think close to 32s or 33's).

So if that full size fits I'm sure a 30.5 donut will on a 18'' wheel. I prefer the look of a compact spare, but not for that price!

You can get a spare OEM wheel for $150-200 and aftermarket for less. Tire for $200 mounted tops. I much rather have a full size spare you can drive on until you get back from your trip instead of being limited in speed, traction, and distance of a mini spare tire.

Goodyear must be pricing these like the skinny tires they put in the front of top fuel dragsters

Maybe a bit late for this discussion, but a good reference point for those Ascents that upgraded to 265/60R18 tires (as above): the 175/90R18 compact/emergency spare tire (donut) from an 2015-2018 Infinity QX70 (and possibly other models/years) has the same 5x114.3 bolt pattern as the Ascent and nearly the same circumference as a 265/60R18 tire (only a 0.3% difference, so should be differential safe/safer - depending on tread depth of the 265/60R18 tires) - although a 66.1 to 56.1 hub centric ring (adaptor) is required. The complete Infinity spare (wheel and tire) is regularly available on eBay for $60-$120. Additionally, this fully inflated QX70 compact/emergency spare tire fits in the Ascent's factory spare tire well underneath the rig.

Let me add that I am a proponent of a full size spare, and have one myself, but at times it can be inconvenient to carry one - even on the hitch-mounted or roof rack carriers. This set-up allows the Ascent to carry a correct size compact/emergency spare tire in the proper circumference out of the way in the factory location for those Ascents with upsized 265/60R18 tires and should be differential safe/safer (again, tread depth of the remaining three 265/60R18 tires should be taken into consideration and the compact/emergency spare tire is only intended for short distances at low speed) if the compact/emergency spare tire is used.

Do you know if it will fit in the spare location?
That's where I have mine. It fits in there fairly well - and does not hang down like a full spare spare would.
Very late to the party here, but I thought I'd chime in because this is something I was considering myself. I decided to ditch the underside spare storage altogether - because I realized that, in case you're doing a little off-roading, or perched on a precarious precipice - the underbody spare might even be wedged between the car and the ground, and impossible to reach.

@BruceTheAscent many forum members would be curious as to how you have your spare positioned. Did you have pics to show how it is mounted?
