Trunk wont open

Hello all,
I recently had my car in for maintenance and where they updating the operating system on the heads up display.
Since getting it back, I've noticed that while the car is running but in park (doors unlocked) my car won't allow me to open the trunk - I just get th 3 beeps. I've tried using the trunk exterior button and the open trunk button on the dash.
Anyone's know if this is normal behavior? I feel like I would have noticed before if this had been happening, but I'm starring to question my memory.

Thanks in advance!

This is an annoying trait of this car. Happens all the time to me.

it should open with either button IF the doors are unlocked when the engine is running. If the engine is not running and you have the fob on you it should open using either button.

I've had that happen a couple of times on my '21....If you hold the button on the hatch itself for several seconds, it'll beep and reset itself. If that doesn't work, dealer may have to look at it.

Make sure you press the door unlock button on the driver's side door before doing the long press on the hatch button on the dash.

@MeganB My 2019 Ascent acted exactly as you describe. It used to work exactly as designed (per the manual), but all of a sudden there was no way to open the rear gate with dash button. I got 3 beeps every time. I had to shut the engine off to get it to work. I was going to have my dealer look at it but then the car was totaled after a collision. I just wanted to let you know that I had the same experience so it is possible that the rear gate activation via the dash button can malfunction without any warning.

There actually is a TSB for earlier Ascents that fixes the issue with a passenger opening their door first which unlocks but doesn't unlock "enough" for the rear hatch button to work without the driver door lock button hit. Perhaps that will help with this situation.

@Jim_in_PA I had that TSB performed on my 2019 shortly after its release. It solved that particular problem, but unfortunately I still ended up with a malfunctioning PRG button a couple years later.

Sounds like it needs to be reset. Go to the exterior back hatch switch and hold it in. Continue holding it in after the 3 beeps (don't let go). Within about 10 seconds the hatch should open. Close it with either button and it should reset to normal operation.

This worked for me, hope it does for you also.

I tried the reset @Packard8 mentioned a few times to no avail. Hopefully you have better luck @MeganB !

I had run down the battery on my 2022 Ascent Limited. We jumped it with my wife’s car, and I drove around for a half an hour then parked it. The next day, I was getting ready to load our suitcases in the back for our vacation and the tailgate would NOT open. We loaded them through the side doors, which was a pain. We set out and looked at YouTube videos and found a couple of solutions. 1. disconnect the positive connection on your battery. (but this MAY lose your radio station presets, etc. 2. BETTER: hold in the button on the trunk latch for a long time. My wife did this and it managed to open. I was not there when she did it, but it worked. We had the rest of the car unlocked at the time. In other words, I don’t know how long she had to hold this button in, but it worked. Note: most auto parts stores sell these gadgets that connect a 9 volt battery to your cigarette lighter; you plug it in if you need to disconnect the battery, and it preserves your radio presets & who knows what else. It sure beats having to re-enter all of your data manually. Good luck.

Regarding your #1: it's a negative ground system, so for safety disconnect the negative terminal first, not the positive.

Re #2, see my post above for what your wife did so you can repeat it.
