Subaru is Listening to You (Whenever you’re talking inside your car, that is)

Could you even imagine how much it would cost to not only transmit voice data from every Subaru vehicle via cellular, which customers may or may not even be paying for, but to also store that data and process it into something useful to sell?

I won’t be losing sleep over whether or not big brother Subaru is listening. And if they were, so what? It’s fairly obvious our phones and connected ‘assistants’ are listening, despite their denial based on the same factors I listed above, yet it continues. Again, so what?

Facebook and Microsoft being the absolute worse…
Google is surprisingly the best at isolating user data from their advertising customers.
Facebook says their algorithm is just that good so it provides relevant ads…. BS
Google says it only listens for “ok Google”… BS

The former is good at providing ads for things I have only spoken about and occasionally only thought about.
The latter is scarily good at combining location data with conversations to display relevant pictures on my Nest Hub at convenient times.

Again, who cares? I’m not planning on doing anything where I need to go into deep hiding. If this data pays for other services I get for free/cheap, it seems like an easy trade off. Why go to lengths to hide from these things when they probably have ways around all our safeguards anyway?
Give it another 20 years or less and the concept of digital privacy will be a thing of the past.

Having worked in cyber security for 7 years before retiring, digital privacy is something to be concerned about. Every data breach leaves every one of us susceptible to fraud and other criminal acts. We can be there most honest, law abiding citizen who doesn't fear the tracking mechanisms but that doesn't matter when nefarious use of our data is a goal. Subaru can be the most benign tracker but that doesn't matter when there's a breach.
I agree with you, but adding a cost/benefit factor...

There are enough protections already available that fraud is little concern, at least to me in my current season of life. Credit cards especially are of little worry for fraud. My credit files are monitored automatically and I receive alerts for every single transaction that goes into and out of my accounts. If something nefarious happens I'll take care of it quickly; its just not worth worrying about on a regular basis. Just a couple days ago I received a letter stating there was a data breach somewhere I used to have an account with. I threw that letter in my burn pile as I'm already assured I'd know if someone was using my data nefariously. That's just my opinion on everything I do publicly that big brother is spying on.

Now if one were to break into my personal files and read the info and data there, that would be a different story. They'd have to do it quickly as I'd also get notifications my info was being accessed. I don't go around talking about these details so it would be known rather quickly if there was a breach. Again, not worth my time worrying about.

You can't stop the threats, only make yourself a less desirable target.
Exactly! I’m slightly entertained at the idea someone/something might be listening in on my dullness 😂
