What's the latest software and map version you have, and has anyone been successful in updating either (if so, how)?

My current system information indicates the following:

Software Version: Rel4.18.20.50
Navi Db Version: North America_2017.03 - Update 3_6513_28/12545/272294/12635

I often get "Download Unsuccessful" when trying to update the system software over wifi, and whenever I try to download a map update over wifi in the Ascent, I get "Map Update Unsuccessful (107)", and tells me, "Use the following request code in the website to download maps and more"... but what website!?! And whenever I try at subaru-maps.com or via the Map Downloader software, I get "Your VIN is not valid" or "Provided VIN is invalid".

Help!

It will be interesting to hear what someone says. I am waiting for my Ascent. The car I have now I was not able to update maps only on a yearly basis.

I'm not sure which version I'm on currently (will check when I get home), but when I checked over the weekend to see if there were any updates, it said I was on the most current version.

Over the course of the day, every day, I'll see both messages: "Your device's software is up to date" and the other that indicates the software download failed and would you like to try again.

Links for maps updates and updating firmware

Ooooh, I can field this one.

  • Those are the latest versions available OTA.
  • "Download unsuccessful" happens if you disconnect from home wifi before it's finished checking. It does NOT necessarily mean an actual update download was unsuccessful
  • There are currently no new OTA updates available.
  • Harman Kardon maintains the maps and firmware updates.
  • The link is here for updates (my VIN isn't in the system yet, so I have no idea if there's anything there):
    https://subaru-maps.com
  • To update errors on the map, go here:
    https://www.mapsharetool.com/external-iframe/external.jsp
In other words, we're all stuck waiting until HK gets our VINs in their system. Sigh.

Hope that helps!

I have over 3400 miles on my Touring and used the GPS most of it. The GPS has a few problems! A few times it told me to turn them after the turn told me to make a u turn and then turn back on the road. It also will announce a turn that is still 2 miles away and you have to watch when it tells you to take the next exit. A few times that was the wrong exit when the correct exit was the next one past the one you. Came to.

That is one of the main reasons why consumers are skipping the factory navigation and relying on Google Maps, Apple Maps, or Waze. Another reason is because voice commands involving the nav unit rarely work/respond properly when driving.
Voice commands are my biggest complaint.
*speak address* address not found
*speak address* address not found
*speak address* found wrong address
pull over and type it in. still wrong.
Turn on google maps, start typing, auto complete, done, go.

I was able to register my Ascent. The key is to remove the dash from the VIN. The first time I did it with the dash and I noticed that when it returned the error of unknown VIN it trimmed of the last character. But once I registered my vehicle and installed the map downloader it just said there are no updates available.

The interesting thing I noticed is that it stated my 'subscription' will end 5/18/2021. I wonder why there is an expiration and if that is reflective of the day the vehicle was assembled.

Why does one need to register Ascent's VIN with the https://subaru-maps.com?

Is not the whole idea of Over the Air map updates just to connect update and get an update, if there is one?

On Forester '16, indeed there was some web site. I registered, put microSD card from car's head unit and got map updates.

Your subscription will expire 3 years from the date your vehicle was put into service for the first time - the date of purchase either by sale or by lease. After that date, you will have to purchase map updates for a fee.

Didn't make sense to me either, but there actually are reasons.

Especially considering that updates are only done via WiFi, there's a couple reasons:
  • Some people don't have the ability to connect their car to their WiFi network (too far away, or building walls too thick). Apartment dwellers are one such group. In my case, my house walls near entirely block the signal, and if I hadn't recently installed an outside repeater in my workshop. my car would never connect.
  • There's rumor that downloadable updates may arrive before OTA ones. So, for those with issues, if that's true, it would make sense to check.

I was referring to the VIN on the window sticker.
I'm aware. I didn't put a dash in when I typed it into the website. So, unless the VIN in my windshield is different than the one in MySubaru app, I'm at a loss. I'll check that later.
