I came out to my Ascent, in the garage (unheated), and the rear windshield was shattered. Temperatures in the twenties. Inexplicable. I am furious beyond words.
Any signs of impact? That's not normal. So, if not, definitely take it in and see if your dealership will help.

I've done -12° to 60° in the same weekend road trip in a blizzard without issues, so, it's not the temperature or temperature changes.

It seems like you have had problems with your hatch from day one - battery drain and now broken glass. That does seem very odd. Is the break simply a crack across the glass or is the entire glass panel shattered? Hope you get satisfactory treatment at the dealership.

Any auto glass can have a defect in manufacturing (as I have posted elsewhere on this forum). The glass could also have been hit with an rock (although not as easily as the front windshield, which is why this is very rare). Sometimes when glass is hit, an owner does not know it and this damage shows up later as the small hit opens up a crack. I am not even sure how to describe the scenario of a rock hitting the the rear window, so without any other evidence of the area being hit, I would think this is probably a case of defective glass production. My wife did just note that she has experienced rocks getting thrown diagnally and to the rear of opposing traffic so it is possible that a vehicle going in the opposite direction threw up a rock to your rear glass as you drove in the opposite direction.

No sign of impact. No, not normal. Subaru is denying coverage or liability, although I have done a little research and there is a class action against them for spontaneously shattering rear windshields, and there may or may not be recall of Crosstrek for the problem. Haven't verified. Something said that Subaru admitted it may come from the heater for the rear wiper and fluid. My dealer won't help.

Entire shattered. Glass everyone. Going to be a huge problem with dog, because I can't get it cleaned up with snow and ice on driveway. Yeah, I'm not a happy camper. Thanks. Dealer won't touch it. I'll let my insurance company duke it out with them.

The Crosstrek issue is front windshields, side glass in the rear.

Finding the NHTSA documents and then ignoring everything on Torque News will help you accurately research.

Did you actually call Subaru of America? Your dealership is not Subaru. ?

Just got off the phone with S of America. They are opening a case file and assigning a resolution specialist. Thanks again for your help. At least someone other than the dealer is involved. Could be there is something a bit nutty about the wiring in my hatch. I'm thinking seriously about trading for an Outback. It's too much car for me anyway.

My previous car was an Outback. I truly loved it, but I needed the extra space. Otherwise, I'd be in a 2020 Outback XT Onyx Edition right now.

I do love my Ascent though. It did take a few thousand extra miles to get used to the extra size.

I just posted in another thread. I have a brand new Outback loaner w leather and nicely equipped. The car is better in every way than the Ascent except space. You would not go wrong getting the Outback

I believe this class action involved the front windshield, not the rear. The class action only pertains to Foresters and Outbacks. This is a very recent filing and I can not find any court proceedings that indicate whether the case has moved along in any way. There was a similar filing in 2017 for similar concerns and other filings against other auto manufacturers' windshields so this is not just about Subaru. To date, I do not believe there are any settlements on either filings. If I am accurate all of it is still being adjudicated (the most recent filing has a long way to go). Having a host of owners/lessees complain does not equate with Subaru being responsible nor does it indicate they are not. That is what the court is for.

There are currently 5 complaints related to the Ascent windshield on the NHTSA website. As a point of reference, I had my windshield chipped by a rock and repaired it the next morning. A short time later it went into the shop where it sat for three weeks. Upon pick up that repaired windshield site grew a crack from that same repaired point of rock chip. I ended up replacing the windshield using my insurance. I did not report it to NHTSA because I do not believe it was due to a defect. Apparently some differ in their perspective.

I will note to owners a word of caution. The current windshields are now an integral part of the structure and therefore considered a safety component as compared to older vehicles. Because of this I generally no longer wait very long to have my windshield replaced. It no longer is simply an issue of "can I see through the chips and cracks" but rather is it still safe (even if eyesight still functions).

We live in Western NY and just has temperatures in the teens. No issues. Take it to your dealer and have them investigate. this is not normal.
