Is your ball mount rattling around in the receiver? Hearing the noise from this is a common problem in unibody vehicles like the Ascent. With body on frame vehicles, the hitch mounts to the frame which provide much more isolation between it and the cabin. A hitch anti rattle device usually solves the problem.

Most rattling and knocks are the trailer tongue on the ball, or the ball mount moving on the receiver. That will not be fixed by tightening the hitch. Something like one of these is the solution tens of thousands of people use.
