I think a better question is how do you make sure the auto sensing wipers are on the on position. It’s raining in SoCal today and the wipers didn’t turn on automatically.

First, you need the Touring trim. Then, you set the wipers to AUTO. The wipers will wipe once to indicate that they are in AUTO mode.

But you are correct that the "auto" position is set at one click down from off.
The dial is also opposite of what you may be, or at least I was, used to. Instead of shorter to longer delay between wipes it's more sensitive (less rain buildup) to less sensitive (more rain buildup). But the thicker bar indicates more sensitive not more time between wipes if that makes sense.
