No, as far as I understand it's similar reasoning that the Outback and Forester only have 4 lower anchor points, yet you can put 3 seats in them if needed - the center position can share one lower anchor point with an adjacent seat.@Carl Abrams, what was Subaru's reasoning for the 5 lower anchors in the second row (bench variant) versus a full 6? <---- honest question, I'm not fishing for a fight. I understand the reasoning for why 5 exists ( https://www.ascentforums.com/forum/...ent-2nd-row-bench-center-car-seat-infant.html ) - but is the lack of the 6th point a concession due to vehicle width (or lack thereof)?
Keep in mind that for me, personally, I did not have to experience the issues with car and child seats that people do today. I grew up in the era where car seat belts were optional, and while we had seats for my kids, they weren't what they are today. However, what I understand is that if the seat uses the lower anchor and the tether (the LAT portion of LATCH), then the actual seat belt itself is NOT used. If you're using the seatbelt and the tether for the car seat because the child is larger, then you don't use the lower anchors.

That's why this isn't a design flaw in the Ascent - the OP is actually using the seats incorrectly according to the guidelines.

NHTSA recommends using a top tether with forward-facing child seats whether you
decide to use the vehicle seat belt or the lower anchors to install your child’s safety seat as long as it
is permitted by both the child safety seat and vehicle manufacturers.
