2019 engine failed on me two weeks ago. They’re trying to figure out the cause but I am going to need a new engine. Has anyone experienced anything similar ?

Sorry to hear about your situation. I'd say that it is pretty uncommon for the 2.4 to fail. It is a hearty beast.
There is a couple of threads on here about engines needing replacement. If you haven't already, I'd suggest using the search feature. I hope it works out for you!

Two weeks ago, I was driving on the highway and the car started jerking while I was accelerating. I saw gray/white thick smoke and started smelling oil or something. I made it off the expressway and after finding a safe place to pull over there was even more smoke. After waiting for the towing company, the battery then died .
I’m waiting to hear from dealership and provided a few receipts from oil changes. They said that Subaru asked them to take apart the engine and figure out the issue as to why it failed.
if they think it’s a Subaru issue, they’ll cover under warranty. The guy at the dealership said thst if they don’t think I maintained the car from the few receipts I gave, they won’t cover it. If that’s the case they’re saying the new engine will be $18,000. I’m wondering what issues could cause an engine to fail ?
How many miles were on your 2019? When was the oil changed last?

Recently! At least late august. I have 58,000
This is an unusual and not a common issue. Sad you are experiencing this, but I guess you got "that one" in the vehicle lottery, unfortunately. And having evidence of regular scheduled maintenance is pretty important for any vehicle warranty.

There is a 5 year, 60K mile powertrain warranty. I you are under these numbers, hopefully, it will be converted under warranty. Keep us posted! It's very unusual to see an engine failure in an Ascent (transmissions are another matter).

Sometimes things break. At my GMC dealer this summer they had a new 6.2 fail after a test drive. That's generally a pretty solid engine, but on that particular day it cost them a sale.

I had my 2019 premium with 77,000 miles fail me on 11/26/2022.We were 350 miles from home and the engine started knocking. All the lights on the dash came on and the car lost power. We had it towed to the closest retailer which was 75 miles away. They have so far put a new battery and starter in it. But the engine knock is still there. Waiting on word from Subaru on the next steps to proceed on. The retailer is stating that they need to do a full engine tear down to determine the issue. The car was just in the dealership for an oil change and inspection a week before it went down.

Funny story...an ex-GF worked at the GMC/Cadillac store in Stockton, CA. I met her there for lunch as a transporter was unloading a batch of new Sierra pickups. I heard "Hey guys, look at this!" It was a new truck with GMC on the tailgate, steering wheel, and fender badging.

But...it had a Chevy Silverado grill, complete with "bowtie" badging. Obviously, Chevy and GMC shared the same assembly line, and someone in the "grill department" had a hangover.

Back in the day when all my friends and I owned '55 & '56 Chevies, we would swap front fenders, grill and hood to make a 55 coming/56 going and 56 coming/55 going. As the owner of a 55, I preferred the 55 going look.

18K$ yeah right. Replace it with a used one if they wont cover under warranty. You're tranny has 58 on it, no need for a 0 mileage longblock. Still 5k$, but would due juust fine.

That does seem high. A friend was quoted $10K for a new factory replacement longblock (installed) for her Mazda CX9 V6 by the local Mazda dealer.
The dealership I have my Subaru at is quoting me an out of pocket expense for a new engine at $17,000. Does this sound reasonable?

Seems excessive to me, but I don't know what such things actually cost...
What did SOA say about warranty coverage? I would think that discussion would take place before an out of pocket number for you the consumer is put on the table at all. But yes, if your on the hook for the longblock, it does not make financial sense to drop 17k$ on a new longblock if the driveline has 58k miles on it.

I would think the wash would be less than 17k to trade it in on a 2023 Ascent as is. Cheapest to get back on road would be a junk yard motor and have dealership install it. My guess, SOA is gonna be covering this repair. Just be polite, honest, and thorough in your experience about what happened.

He'll no ! That is way to high. If it's a built motor you know better crank ,forged pistons.machined head, bigger turbo then
maybe. But 17 no way.

I doubt that the dealer will install a used motor, only a new or factory rebuilt one from Subaru. My GF blew the engine on her Mazda CX9 and was quoted $10K installed for a new one from the Mazda dealer. They will only install and warrantee OEM parts. A local independent shop would be the best bet for a used engine.

You got it right. I just spit my soda out when I read that. Lol
