Hi, I'm scheduled to pick up a new ascent base tonight, white with black interior. Super excited but also second guessing not getting the premium. I really don't need any of the added options and I'm really trying to keep cost down, but that's alot of extra features for a couple Grand increase in msrp!

What do you all think? Those who went one way or the other, did you have regrets? And if so why?

Hello and welcome

I have to say of all the people and discussions I've seen on this forum, I haven't heard anyone mention purchasing a base Ascent before. Congratulations! I totally understand trying to keep the price down. Not sure what your needs are, but if the base works for you, that's all that matters. On your base model, were you able to get a price close to the Invoice price? If not, you could try purchasing through Costco or Subaru VIP program to get some significant savings, which may, in turn, allow you to step up to a Premium model with no additional costs. Not sure if you need a car immediately, but if you did the Subaru VIP program, you might have to order it from the factory, which would be a wait of 8-12 weeks on average. Just something to think about.

Not sure if you've owned a Subaru before, but I can say we are really enjoying our 3rd Subaru(Ascent). Loving all the technology and still trying to get used to it all. It's nice that even the base has most of the same safety technology as the top of the line Touring model. Good luck on your purchase and enjoy your new Subaru!

We love our Crimson Red Touring, but I will say that it is much larger than you would think it would be. I have a 2007 VW Touareg and the Ascent is far larger. I almost feels as big as the 98 Expedition I once had. You will need a step ladder and much time to wash an Ascent. Very comfortable and smooth riding, quiet inside. We love the Touring with all the fun features. The stereo is awesome, the remote start, some leather on the seats. But so much more expensive. Again it is large and in the city difficult to find a suitable parking when out shopping. Keep away from other cars because the door panels are soft and the paint is easily chipped. Our 3 month old Subaru has more dings than our 11 year old VW Touareg, that thing has indestructible paint. I have been learning how to polish the car properly with a powered polishing tool and high quality polish followed by wax and the Ascent is looking so good.

I’ve had Ascent, premium trim including option 12 for two days now. We opted for the premium to gain a few more things that the base didn’t have. I would of liked some of the features the limited trim offers but they weren’t totally necessary and we wanted to keep the cost down. Coming from a 13 year old car- we are over the moon with this car so far. I had been researching 3 row vehicles for months and comparing pricing features etc and Ascent came out the best for us. As of yet, I’m not regretting the premium trim and hoping I won’t going forward. If the base has everything you want, then I say go for it. If you have wiggle room in price and are second guessing it then maybe use the compare trim feature on Subaru website or reference the Ascent booklet at your dealer to compare which trim has what and if you foresee wishing you would have got a different trim. I went to the dealership and looked over the base that we were waiting for, then in the showroom I looked over a touring. I'm not a big leather seats guy , actually prefer cloth, and all the options are nice, but as I went through the list I honestly couldn't find one thing it has where I said to myself, I need this.
That, combined with the fact the next premium wouldn't arrive for a month, and we're about to get snow here in wny, I needed to trade my 2013 WRX for something asap (summer tires , no bueno in snow).
Also they gave me such a great deal on the base and my trade, I really felt like they might change their minds if I didnt sign something! The new ascent ended up being 31k and they gave me 19k for my wrx so I had to take it.
That plus we really do need to keep costs down. We were actually looking at used or newcars in the 25-28k range so the 30+k cars were already a stretch for us financially. So it really didn't make sense to add more cost for some features we honestly don't need.
So far we're very pleased with the ascent. It's no wrx but I knew that going into it. I don't find the size an issue personally, I felt like the Ascent handles very well and feels much more nimble than I expected a 4400 lb SUV to be. And visibility is great. The rear view camera is so much better than anything I've used before, I think I can reverse more quickly and confidently in this than I could in my wrx!
I think I'm going to to install a hitch and harness so I can tow light trailers like small utility trailers which honestly will probably be all I ever want to do with it.
I think the only things I might want down the road are tinted windows and remote start, but I actually don't want the remote start the premium comes with, I would prefer not to require internet service.
