Hello, we’ve put $ down on our 1st Subaru - a 2019 Ascent Limited that is a Manufacturer Repurchase. Does this hurt resale values? Would love anyone’s insight if this is a good idea or not. Thanks

Hi, and welcome.

Why did Subaru repurchase it? I would imagine a repossession (such as for lack of payment) would be done by the bank or credit agency and not by the manufacturer (but then maybe Subaru bought the car back from the bank?). The only reason I'd think Subaru would buy a car back is from extreme dissatisfaction from the first customer...either really did not like it or too many mechanical problems (Lemon Law).

Can you get any information from the dealer on why it was repurchased? If it was for something not related to mechanical reliability, then I probably wouldn't worry about it.

I started getting solicitations from Subaru to by back my '19 six months after purchase, suggesting I upgrade to the new model. They wouldn't send so many of those out if they didn't convince someone that they should get a new version every year <shrug>

Since covid the used and new vehicle markets have had to make major adjustments. The dealers are trying to get their hands on more used cars to satisfy the demand. yes at the same time they encourage an upgrade which meets both market goals.
