Hi folks - we are considering a 2021 Ascent Touring purchase. It appears that the 2019 model has had some challenges with the transmission / CVT. When we test drove the Ascent we did notice some "pause/delay" in the shifting (nothing major, but wife commented on it after the drive). Should we be concerned about potential transmission issues in the 2021 model? Thanks for any advice. Would be first Subaru and first new car in 15 years. Mostly used to transport family / kids.

Hi! And, welcome to the forums! Don't worry, virtually no Ascent had CVT problems. 2019 Ascents had a harness issue that cause some CVTs to be damaged (but the problem wasn't from the CVT itself). The harness was revised, and the new one is included in the 2020 and 2021 Ascent.

The car does have a little bit of turbo lag, and, when cold, will hold onto a gear for a long time, as it warms things up. Also, the throttle/gas pedal has an odd throttle tip-in point.

Regardless, if you're not sure of the cause, and can demonstrate it to your dealership, please have them check it out.

We've been pretty happy with our 2020 model. Some of the things you and Robert noted above are just "part of the experience". As with your family, this is our first Subaru and only our second new vehicle purchase ever (the previous being in 2007) -- we usually buy used.

In fact, everything about this car is different (which has been fun). 1st boxer engine. 1st turbocharged engine. 1st Subaru. 1st CVT. 1st full-time AWD car. 1st car with driver/safety aids (EyeSight). It's been good for us so far.

Quick followup - test drove the Ascent again... different vehicle same model (Touring)... putting it through a more thorough drive. Came away impressed and no issues. Long story short, after a couple of days of negotiation we drove away with our brand new vehicle this evening on 12/31/2020... seemed like a good way to close out 2020 and start a new year, so we did! :)
