Took a long round trip from El Paso, TX to Houston, just over1,500 miles. Gentle Acceleration with ACC 95% of the time and speed set between 70 (300 miles) and 85 (1200 miles). There were only 2 adult, 3 small dogs and 40 pounds of gear. Nothing on the roof. At the end of the trip the Ascent had a total of 2,800 miles.

According to the Ascent's calculations the average was 20.8 mpg. Many have reported that the onboard calculations were not accurate but on the high side. I was hoping for least 25 mpg on long uninterrupted interstate drives.

Is this average mpg acceptable to the group?

At predominantly 85, absolutely! To get 25 you're going to have to slow down to the 75-80mph range. You can use the instantaneous readout to guide you, as your average will generally be about 5mpg lower than the highest sustained reading you have while cruising. So if you want to average 25, your instantaneous needs to be around 30. As you slow your speed from 85 to 80 to 75 you'll see that instantaneous slowly creep up. For your trip in Texas where the speed limits are higher, 21 is to be expected.

Speed between 70 and 85 is what killed your fuel economy. 65-70 you should be able to get 25+. I average about 27 at those speeds. At 85, you're pushing what is a two and a quarter ton brick through the air at great cost.

I got 27.5 mpg in my 2022 touring - also buy Mobile/Chevron Reg Gas, it has the additives. You will not get great MPG in any SUV at over 80mph including in the Forester. Here the speed limit is 70 mph so I go about 78 max. Would I prefer to go faster on the interstate - YES.

This trip was 400 miles. 80 miles on Interstate 75 in flat Florida, and 320 miles on Highway 70 and 98, going 70mph top speed, but also thru a few small cities but as you can tell mostly rural Florida farm lands.
