Is a pre-order a done deal?

So my question is that we pre-ordered back when they started taking orders. Picked a model and color. Paid a deposit. We did no negociations, just asked for the car and paid a deposit. So is this considered a done deal? When we go back to the dealer when our requested car comes in what if any negotiating can we do at that point? Would the deposit be refundable? What is your experience or knowledge of this? We have to things were are concerned about one is that two other local dealers offer the Costo $3K discount and so far this dealer does not. And although we are excited about the car we are not so keen about the cost and monthly payments as we are very thrifty folks. This car would be twice as much as any car I have ever bought and for my wife 3 times as much.

I was told by my dealer that a $250 deposit let me do my pre-order, once my Ascent arrives I can test drive it and if I don't want it I can get my $250 back. I think for the wheeling and dealing that would depend on each dealer? You might be able to do some comparison shopping, if you can find a better deal at another dealer ask your dealer to match or do better. Good Luck.

When I pre ordered I negotiated a price before I put a deposit down and signed the order slip with the price that was agreed upon. I wanted to know what I would be paying before I ordered so they couldn’t adjust the price on me. And that was in March. Cause I think the demand now is greater than when it was earlier in the year so might not be much wiggle room to negotiate w/ your current dealer. And I talked to a few dealers before choosing the one I went with. And I got just below invoice on a Limited 8 passenger w/ hitch.

I pre ordered put $1000.00 down. Pricing was based off of MSRP(at the time they claimed they had no other pricing to refer to) but they wrote on the order that they would honor Costco pricing.

My understanding like others is you are not bound to that car. If you simply think the color sucks you can walk away with your deposit in hand :)
It is not a done deal and you should be able to get your deposit back (not sure what your agreement is). I myself did that. I cancelled my first pre-order, got back my deposit and ordered from another dealer who gave me very good pricing.
I've canceled a pre-order in Illinois, and another one in California. Pre-orders are certainly not done deals by any means. You can ask for your deposit back at anytime until you sign the final paperwork to get the car.

None of these are 'done deals'. At best they are 'rights of first refusal's.

This is what makes all the BS about 'sales' here from dealer members so shallow.
