Toyota has Subaru beat on engine durability and transmission durability. Subaru has Toyota beat on modern body / platform design, eyesight technology and interior design ie modern and space.

I have to disagree with you on the transmission thing. The Aisin 8-speed found in the new Toyota models is not very good. There was a seemingly high (for Toyota) failure rate on 2017 Highlander transmissions as well as various performance issues. I can tell you from experience: that same 8-speed in the Camry is awful.

Engine wise, that 3.5L is wonderful. Efficient, buttery smooth, and powerful. I am told it is also quite reliable.

The new Highlander still has a rougher, truck-like feel when driving. My older Sienna minivan had a smoother ride. (I bought the Ascent.)
