How do you transport your dogs? Do you use a cargo separator, restraints, kennel box or let them free in the vehicle?

Hello! New to the forum and new to Subaru overall. Gonna be getting an ascent probably around this time next year (wanna wait till they work out the 1st year bugs)
I don’t technically fit the demographic for the Ascent. Married but no kids, although we do have dogs. This will mostly be an adventure/stuff/dog/friends/family hauler. Saw it at the auto show and loved it. Been waiting for it since the reveal in LA last year. For now, just gonna be interacting here and there and researching.

I use harnesses connected to the child seat tether points. With the Ascent I may invest in a dog gate, which is a big metal grate that separates the dogs from the passenger compartment, similar to what you can get in a Volvo. It’s against the law in some states to let you roam free in the vehicle.How do you transport your dogs? Do you use a cargo separator, restraints, kennel box or let them free in the vehicle?
