If you're going a short distance and really understand and have a good feel for the power train and drive train, then maybe you can get away with it. But still not worth it. Renting a pick up for the weekend doesn't cost that much anyways. Easier to rent a Silverado than to crunch these numbers. The 2018 Crosstrek Limited doesn't look like a car that can tow a 3500 lb boat and trailer, couldn't even find the tow rating for it. Not sure about the Ascent, but people are speculating somewhere around 4,000lbs and higher.
Well, turns out that the new 2018 Crosstrek is such a hot seller that my preferred color and trim are all sold out. Will have to wait 2 months for next batch to arrive. Even the current ones on the next boat are all pre-sold. And chances are demand will still be high at that time. You can always buy something used for now that might not suffer much of a depreciation in price when you're ready to sell. I see a lot of people doing that and it works out great for them. Beats renting a car.
