Have owned 3 subies in the past, but not currently. Waiting for the Ascent to come out. Hope it will meet my expectations.

Thanks. Yeah, normally don't worry about snow in Vancouver,... until last winter!! But we ski and snow hike, so still need it to go up into the mountains. And we have a cabin at Harrison Lake with a rough logging road for the last 15 kms.

Not sure if I can wait long enough for the Ascent. As it happens, wife and I did a test ride just today in a 2018 Crosstrek Limited. Probably was a big mistake as she really likes it. However, not sure how well it will pull our 3500 lb boat and trailer?? Plus I would really like a little more power just for driving... We also have a Prius C for around town, and I think it could beat that Crosstrek from a red light!!

The 2018 Crosstrek Limited doesn't look like a car that can tow a 3500 lb boat and trailer, couldn't even find the tow rating for it. Not sure about the Ascent, but people are speculating somewhere around 4,000lbs and higher.

If you're going a short distance and really understand and have a good feel for the power train and drive train, then maybe you can get away with it. But still not worth it. Renting a pick up for the weekend doesn't cost that much anyways. Easier to rent a Silverado than to crunch these numbers.

Yes, I fully realize this is more than what the Crosstrek is rated for (1500 pounds). But I only have to do it twice a year, once in the spring to take it out to our lake (moored there for the summer), and then pull it out in the fall. It is only about 50 miles distance and no big hills.

I have actually pulled this same boat/trailer in the past with my old Legacy wagon (135 hp), and it handled OK. Of course I drove very carefully and made sure I didn't follow anyone too closely. The trailer does have surge brakes. Biggest concern always was being pulled over by a cop, as that car definitely looked a little small in front of that boat. But the Crosstrek is a lot taller, so hopefully won't attract that attention.

Having said all that, I would still prefer the Ascent, for that and other reasons. But I just don't know if I can wait that long.

I just noticed that in Europe the Crosstrek (called XV there) towing capacity is 3500 pounds. In Australia it is 3000 pounds. Not sure why it is so low here (at 1500 pounds), but probably has to do with some safety regulations.

You can always buy something used for now that might not suffer much of a depreciation in price when you're ready to sell. I see a lot of people doing that and it works out great for them. Beats renting a car.

Well, turns out that the new 2018 Crosstrek is such a hot seller that my preferred color and trim are all sold out. Will have to wait 2 months for next batch to arrive. Even the current ones on the next boat are all pre-sold. And chances are demand will still be high at that time.

The new Ascent should be announce in November so I might as well wait until then.

Well, I did put in an order for a Crosstrek. Supposed to get it at the end of November. Still like the Ascent, but didn't want to wait until next summer to buy it. And a couple more test drives of the Crosstrek sold me. That is one sweet ride.

Having said that, might still be an Ascent in our future. Can always sell our other car (2014 Toyota), and make it a two Subaru family. Will have a good look at the Ascent when it finally becomes available, and also will depend how it is priced.
