I’m supposed to pick up our new travel trailer next month and am concerned about towing with only the donut spare tire. I know moderator Robert Mauro says he carries a full size spare deflated and it fits in the spare mount no problem. My question is trying to find a cheap rim to mount a spare tire on. I can’t find any plain steel 18” rims for an Ascent. The least expensive option I’ve seen is getting a used OEM premium wheel off EBay for around $185, and that’s minus a TPMS valve. Has anyone else found a cheaper solution to going this route, or is that my only option ?

There are one or two 18" steelies that apparently fit. There's a thread on them someplace, if you search for steel rims. Some folks up in Canada found a couple that fit after a bunch of tries.

I think you can find after-market alloy wheels for ~$120 that meet the mechanical and load requirements.

From what I could find researching the steel wheel discussion threads, the people that got them found they didn’t properly clear the front brake calipers. Discount tire has a couple cheaper alloy rims for around $120-130 range, so I guess if I want a full size that’s the way to go. I currently carry a tire plug kit and an air compressor in my trunk, this would work just fine if a flat is repairable using that, but if a sidewall failure occurred you’d have to resort to a spare.

I was looking at canadawheels.ca and they show different types of steel wheels available for the 18" Ascent wheels. But who knows if they actually fit... Merope is correct you can find aluminum mags for 120ish but be careful, in my search for alum wheels I found most didn't meet the load rating that the Ascent requires and the wheel websites typically don't list load ranges.. This really becomes important when towing big loads and that is something I need to be able to do. If you find a place that shows the load range of the wheels please share it with us.

There are several wheel options that would meet the criteria you are looking for, as its been mentioned, regardless of where you get the wheel just make sure it at least meets or exceeds the OEM specs especially for your towing needs.

Thanks Dicount tire, I looked at the wheels rated for a base Ascent 18" diameter and out of the 5 listed only 2 wheels met the weight criteria. I believe Robert stated somewhere here we should be looking for wheels that support 1850 Lbs if we tow.... if no towing we can settle with wheels rated for 1800 Lbs. But nice to see they are load rated on your site. :)

The exact no-safety-margin rating would be 1,648 pounds based on the GAWR-R on the Ascent (which is exactly the same on all trim levels, at 3,296 pounds rear axle or 1,648 per side). I personally prefer a safety margin, especially with pot holes here, my off-roading and towing. The other reason I like having a safety margin is because no one loads their vehicle perfectly (and I often load up to the Ascent's limits for an adventure, regardless of if I am towing).

My rims are rated at 1,800 pounds, and, in general, I prefer 1,800-1,850 pounds as the bottom of the safety margin, especially since it closely coincides with the safety margin on the tires that Subaru selected (1,879 pounds on the Touring's 20" tires).

@Discount Tire can recommend far better than me, but, on a Subie, I always like considering that they're often used above and beyond how other cars and SUVs are used - so I prefer planning for the extra abuse. For instance, I have never seen a Honda CR-V attempting even a fraction of the things I do with my former Outback or current Ascent.

Interesting thing I've found is that people who've never went out and done some of what I do with my Subies, and think they never would, suddenly start doing such adventures during the lifetime of their Subarus. I'm actually one such person. My Outback was my 30th car, and, even having owned a Range Rover before that, I have never done as much off road, or overland, or on the beach as I did with my Outback - until my Ascent, where I've easily done thousands more miles of non-road driving. It took me a year to get all terrains for my Outback. I had ordered my test rims and all terrains for my Ascent in days, and had been making the plans since before I picked it up. :ROFLMAO: ;)

Thanks for clarifying that Robert. My wife is similar, she treats every vehicle like it's a Chevy Suburban. We've had a few and between towing our 4600 Lb boat and loading the vehicle with all sorts of heavy equipment, we probably should err on the safe side of load ratings. I never thought that an Ascent would be able to do all this but these new mid sized 8 pass SUV's can handle it. It's a relief because trying to park a suburban in Canada is nearly impossible with the smaller parking spaces we see now. The Ascent isn't small but it will do the job the burb used to do and get twice the mileage. It's a huge gain. :)

Your definition of safety margin differs from mine and what's normally used in industry. Anything designed with a limit will include a safety margin. Whether you want to include your own on top of that is up to you.

Rims have a static load limit. There is no tested safety margin specs available anywhere.

Safety margins, as applied to Subaru chosen wheel components, are above stated maximum needs. Just like the safety margin for chain clamping in the CVT. And then, from there, artificial limits are placed on the rest of the drivetrain, such as our computer governed 130 mph top speed to match the tire speed ratings while ignoring any safety margin built into the tire design.

I traded in my Yukon Denali XL on the Ascent and couldn't be happier.

Are you doing a five tire rotation yet? If so, what pattern, how many miles? I contacted SOA, and of course they told me not to do a five tire rotation.

My first rotation is in a couple weeks. I am working on digging out the 5 tire instructions. Keep in mind mine aren't directional.

Hi, you mentioned in another thread, that you could fit 265/50R20 on an Ascent? Can it be done without any rub on 20 inch wheels? I was interested in these wheels:

265/50R20 is pushing things on the Ascent...255/50R20 may be a safer bet if you "must" upsize. But you must also upsize your spare to the same diameter...required for AWD/4WD vehicles to avoid damage to drivetrains.

I’ve got extra stock/oem tires for my 2019 touring (20”). Will these fit underneath as a full size a full size spare?

Yes, deflated, it will. But, it may snag on something if you off road or have a steep departure angle on your driveway.
