Some of you may have followed an accident I was in just two months ago. I've had the car back for maybe 2-3 weeks now and I was very happy. Was...

Last night I was in another not-at-fault crash - just terrible luck! I'm happy that I was alone and my family was at home. Somebody ran a red light going fast, hit a truck, then the rear of the truck swung aroiund and hit me - hard! I was picking glass out my clothes and hair all night. 12 hours later, I'm just very sad. I would ultimately like to have my car fixed, but I'll be prepared to purchase a new Ascent or Outback if necessary. I was actually hoping to hang onto this Ascent longer than any other car I've had (my record is 6 years). Right now I'm playing the waiting game, and I don't expect much movement with Thanksgiving here.

What are your thoughts on this damage?

Ouch, I am hoping you're ok!!!

You've got an inner and outer SGP rail in that area, plus the structural pillars (B and C). The C Pillar looks compromised. Generally, those are not repaired, or a big chunk of the car has to come out and replacement has to be welded back into place.

Note this image (black section being replacement for a bent b pillar) from this page.

As a for instance, when Subaru had the B-Pillar recall, their plan was to inspect the B-Pillars for missing welds, and scrap any car that had missing welds, instead of replacing or re-welding the pillars (short version of that was there were no customer delivered cars affected, and the non-delivered cars had the proper number of welds).

So, hopefully neither pillar is damaged. Unlike parts of the SGP's rails, I do not think those are "bend straight" frame parts.

Sad to read this, 'rock. What Robert mentions makes a lot of sense...it's really going to come down to what the actual damage is.

I’m going to expect this car to be totaled, but hope to be surprised. The car is being towed to the body shop today where my insurance will inspect it at some point.

I plan to recover the crossbars and some personal items. If only I could take the tires too. It’s not totally modified but I had it exactly how I wanted it. I was hoping for several good years ahead.

Robert, I was checking your thread for an update on your situation. Hopefully it’s going well.

rockthebeef,
So sorry to hear about this accident specially of no fault of yours. Glad no one was injured.
I hope everything turns out well for you and the family.
Sad it had to happen during the Thanksgiving week.

Sorry to see the Ascent so damaged in two separate events. Glad you are okay. Hope their insurance company makes you whole again, whether it is a repair to this Ascent or provide the funds for a new Subaru. So many drivers here in Denver, CO (where I live) have no regard for traffic laws and routinely blow through stop signs and stop lights. I know once in awhile it cannot be avoided, but usually the drivers just don't care about stopping on their way to nowhere. Keep us updated.

Thank you. I was very excited for a trip this weekend where I'd get to bring my new mountain bike up to the mountains using my new bike rack for the first time. It was going to be a great rig. I literally just got my car back from the body shop about 3 weeks ago from a previous accident where I wasn't at fault either. I can't help to to feel really bummed out. I was venting to my wife that I always have a bond with my vehicles. This is the worst feeling I've ever had relating to one of them. I guess it could be worse.

Luckily my friends picked up my bike on their way up this morning. We'll be taking my wife's car up most likely. I just got a rental Jeep Compass, which isn't actually that bad for what it is. If our stuff fits, we might take it instead.

I'm really really hoping for good news from the body shop.

Thank you. I've been extra careful looking in all directions at intersections, especially since the recent crash. Last night the truck that was to my left was blocking my view of who was coming up on the left. I used to think it was pretty secure when there was a car blocking your side when crossing an intersection, but that pickup whipped around so fast! That damage to my door was from the bed of an F250 work truck as it swung against my car.

I keep playing "what if?". What if I waited a minute more before I went out? What if I didn't go to run that errand until this morning? ...I can drive myself nuts doing that. I just wish it was actually a challenge to get a driver's license.

with both of these accidents if you consider the diminished value loss, yes it is highly likely a total loss. claiming diminished value for both accidents is an option (even after the fact for your first accident) if your state allows for it. when selling a vehicle as a trade, one of the first questions they ask is if the vehicle was ever in an accident.

There is no way I as buyer would purchase this vehicle after the repairs of the two accidents.

Yes, I wouldn't buiy it either. I'm coming to terms and maybe hoping for a total loss at this point. I just hope I can get into another Ascent or OB Wilderness asap. If I go Ascent, I'll definitely want a 2023.

Just got a message that it's likely a total loss. It's probably for the best. After this long weekend I'm going to go to the body shop to remove everything I can. I can now only hope the wait isn't too long for a new Ascent. It would be my first choice over an Outback Wilderness, which I think might be easier to get from my initial research.

Considering all the factors including no body was hurt I think this will be the best solution.
Please enjoy the Thanksgiving and best of luck on the new Ascent coming your way.
Keep us informed when you get it 👍

see if a dealer will provide vip pricing with something in route given your accidents.

So sorry that happened, that's super crappy luck. Glad you are okay, that's always the main thing, but that just really, really stinks to lose your car like that. Hoping the new one you get will be amazing and accident free for many, many years to come.

Give the back to back accidents, I also think this is the best outcome for you for the long term. Hopefully, your Subaru dealer will be able to help you get the vehicle you want within a reasonable time and perhaps even a low cost rental when your insurance provided rental runs out to tide you over while you wait for your new ride, if a wait is required.

Aw man, that really sucks and I'm sorry to hear (read) it. Based on the first post's photo, I was of the opinion that the doors look pretty blasted, but the C-pillar might just have body-skin damage. The roofline doesn't look bent. But...then I read the rest of the thread. Crossed fingers you get a replacement soon.

I have a 2019 Ascent and it was just repaired with a new rear door, driver side 1/4 panel and rear bumper. Also, the rear A/C fan in the driver side back panel had to be replaced. The cost was $14,000.00 . I was happy the Insurance Co did not total it because it would have still cost me thousands of dollars out of pocket to buy a new one and I plan to keep this car a long time.
