Do you know you can cancel the "Close and Lock" button in MY-2023 by doing this? ...

Owner manual p153: "By pushing the power rear gate lock button for more than 2 seconds, all doors are locked, however, the auto door closing function of the rear gate will be canceled."

I could not figure out why sometimes when I pressed this button, nothing happened — the gate did not close and there was no audible feedback, as if the button was ... canceled. I think I just found out why. For a while I have been long-pressing this button under the impression that that is what I was supposed to do. It is possible that I pressed it too long at some point ... Will see ... However, I don't understand the operational logic here, making it difficult to predict the link between my action and the outcome.

If you have been having problems with the power rear gate, hopefully, this information may help.

except sometimes my hatch doesn't open when pressing my gate button at the hatch. it is inconsistent.

This happens to me sometimes. I think the button outside the gate needs just a short squeeze to open. I suspect sometimes I press it hard and/or for too long? Testing now ... The long vs short press depending on which button we use is confusing ...
Other criteria for it to open via that button are car in park, doors unlocked/fob on your possession at the back liftgate.

For the button outside the rear gate? No, the car does not need to be un-locked for the button to work to open the gate. And ... then sometimes it does, which is how we got confused.
BTW, I am also confused by how the rear gate reset is supposed to work. When I cannot open the rear gate from the outside, I would hold that button for 10 sec but all it would do is to chirp 3x, but it wouldn't open, as described in the owner manual. It could be opened by the key fob, however. Then I often not sure what to do next. Sometimes I would use the button on the far left side of the gate to close it, and immediately after this, I usually have no problem re-opening it again using the external button next to the camera. I am now not sure about this, because the owner manual seems to suggest that the gate to be closed manually to allow the re-initiation cycle to complete?

I think the inconsistency in the operation* plus the possibility of getting the system to cancel or stuck is making the simple task of opening and closing a gate complicated. I sent all of these complaints to SOA to see if they can streamline these in a future software update.

*A long press using the button on the dash and key fob is needed to open and close the rear gate, but only a quick press is enough using using the buttons on the rear gate itself . Why all of this complexity? On the key fob itself, a quick press can open and lock the doors so why opening and closing the gate have to be different? To top it off is to cancel a button by long pressing on the wrong button as I described above.

*The second confusion is how to open the rear gate in situations when you do not want/need to open all the doors — e.g., loading grocery, cargos, ... etc. This should be allowed at all times by using the key fob or the button on the outside of the gate (w the key fob on us). So why sometimes the doors must be unlocked first to permit this is confusing.

I just realized that if the driver is in the car, there seems to be different requirements to open or close the gate using the button on the dash. I believe the car must be in P, which is logical. However can I open the rear gate when all the rest of the doors are still locked? One would imagine the answer should be Yes, as in situations when I pull up to pick up my wife from a grocery store or from the airport (when I am too lazy to come out to help)... More, does pressing the unlock button on the driver door unlock just the driver door or all the doors? ... Oh gee, I can't remember ...

Hence the slash (yet poorly explained by me, sorry).

The FOB is the unlock trigger. Pressing the liftgate's external button causes the car to look for the FOB at the liftgate. That's the "doors unlocked" (or at least liftgate unlocked, depending on setting) trigger cause by the FOB presence. The doors will not unlock if the FOB isn't in proximity, and then the gate won't open.

1. Long press assures it's an intentional operator request, not accidental
2. When you're already standing at the gate it's an operator action

a quick press can open and lock the doors so why opening and closing the gate have to be different? T
Because when the doors are unlocked, the doors are still closed, they don't swing open on their own. The gate swings open so again the need for conscious action by an operator.
