The overflow plug is on about the same level as the drain. I assume that there is an internal tube or passage in a casting going up to the fill level. When you first remove it there will be some fluid that will run out consistent with my internal tube theory. I am sure someone will either confirm or correct me.

It holds 1.2 to 1.3 quarts.

Yes, i did read that towards the beginning of the thread, but given the outward appearance of the pan design, i just wasn’t sure how. Robert D’s explanation cleared it up for me though!

FYI - Getting the service manual is fairly inexpensive ~$35 for a three day subscription. I downloaded all the pdf manuals for the Ascent and my daughter’s forester. Two service manuals for $35 not bad.

The fill level is determined by where the top of bore is for the drain hole. Can't tell from the pic how far that goes up into the diff.
