CVT Replacement

Took my 2019 Ascent into dealer on Aug 4th for some small issues I was having with my car. Get a call at the end of the day that they are keeping the car and that the CVT needs replacing. The CVT was delivered to the dealer on Sept 6. I was told the car would be ready within a few days. Get a weird call today and the service writer said that my "transmission was still on order." "What? Still on order?" I reminded her that the transmission arrived on Tuesday. Then she said, when that transmission was installed it wasn't working. She said that she filed an ESA (or something like that) with Subaru of America. I asked what that was and she said it will help get another transmission. This doesn't give me confidence in a "rebuilt transmission." I am very frustrated and wondering what I can do? My car has 44,000 +/-

I read on some postings that people called Subaru of America and got some freebies. What is my best course of action? I am not complaining about the dealership but about the situation and Subaru of America. Any advice would be appreciated.

Im confused. You stated you went into the dealership for a small issue yet for some reason they checked your transmission and determined it needed replacing. Was your Ascent part of the recent recall? Had you been notified by SOA or the dealership regarding the recall?

Yes my Subaru was part of the recall. I was having minor chugging and AC not working correctly including the "Apple Phone" not working. I was not planning for the car to be kept. I took it in for the recall 3 times and each time they said there was "no fix." Then all of a sudden they are keeping my car.
If it's being replaced under the recall then all is good. I'd just open a ticket with SoA to kindly ask what was going on with the first replacement and how they can assist you with the inconvenience of an extended repair.

Subaru is the only manufacturer to rebuild the CVT if that is the case, they build and manufacturer the Lineartronic line of transmissions.

Our 9th Subaru, a ‘20 LTD, started shuddering & lurching in 10/21. Dealer SVC MGR stated that a”fix” was in the works & if our CVT completely failed it would be replaced. Received the NHTSA Recall notice in late 1/22, stating that there wouldn’t be a fix until at least 5/22. I traded the Ascent in for a ‘22 Highlander LTD 2/26/22…suffering a little on the trade-in value due to the open recall. Given the need for a 2nd recall and stories like yours, the trade in approach sounds like the way to go. SOA has betrayed its loyal owners with their handling of this CVT mess. There won’t likely be a Subaru #10 ever gracing a bay in our garage.

Well, they're addressing all the issues, even if it means recalling almost all the Ascents in the early years.

That's something ZF-9 transmission owners aren't getting. Instead, Honda, Acura and the likes switched to a new transmission for the new model year and aren't addressing the issues with the ZF-9HF. I'd rather a company that goes through the effort than pretend (a few of the ZF-9HF using companies, who did a recall for "programming" that didn't really fix the issue) or do nothing (all of them after the initial "recall").

Here's the full list: Acura TLX, Acura MDX, Chrysler 200, Chrysler Pacifica (2017– gas versions only), Fiat Doblò, Fiat 500X, Honda Pilot, Honda Odyssey, Honda Passport, Honda Civic (201:cool:, Honda CR-V (diesel 2015-) Jeep Cherokee (KL), Jeep Renegade, Ram ProMaster City, Range Rover Evoque, Land Rover Discovery Sport, Jaguar E-Pace.

Most importantly though, you need to do what makes you feel comfortable, and drive what you enjoy driving. Wishing you much enjoyment in your new Highlander!!!

Just tonight I asked my Honda service manager whether I should go with the ZF 9-speed or the Honda 10-speed, no surprise he said the 10-speed.
