Can I get different tire size for original Rim

1793 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Daniel Acosta
Currently I’m due for new tires on my 2021 ascent Premium and it currently have from stock 245/60r18 continental tires that I drove at 26,352 mileage. I’m from south Florida. Don’t want to get the same tire since it doesn’t seem to last long. I am looking at Yokohama Geolanders but noticed they sale them at a larger size. How much bigger can I go with the original rims? For example 265/60r18 or 265/55r18? Any suggestions?

If you look at Discount Tire or other sites, they will list the acceptable rim width for the tire sizes you're looking at. The bigger question is how much bigger can you go without rubbing? I don't know the answer to that. In the past with my trucks, I would have the tire dealer do a test fit and if it was too big, then switch to something smaller. Most tire shops have a pretty good feel for what will fit.
I'm running Michelin CC2s in 235/65R18 on my 2022 Onyx. I switched from the OEM 20s. I prefer a taller sidewall than the standard 18" tires. The diameter is about .5" larger so I went with a full size spare in the same size. The speedo/odo is slightly off, but not to the extent that it is a concern.

BTW, I bought from Discount Tire and got a good deal (price matched Costco) and great service at their local store. (y)
Thank you for reaching out @dtrelles70!

With factory wheels, you can comfortably fit 265/60R-18 tires and as Packard 8 noted, 235/65R-18. 265/55R-18 in theory would work as well, however I'm not aware of any manufactures producing tires in this particular size.

You mentioned the Yokohama Geolandar. If you're after the G015 model, then from these sizes you'll want to look at the 265/60R-18.

Where are you keeping your full size spare?

The spare is in the normal location. Robert M has cautioned about "bottoming out" (he did), but so far, in 14 months and 11K miles, it hasn't happened. You do lose some departure angle, but the "Y" pipe is actually lower than the spare so no loss of overall ground clearance. If I did a lot of what Robert does (offroading), I would install a roof rack and keep it there.

You're a lot braver than I am, I'd scrape the back bumper off for sure. We're sticking with our Outback and its full size spare for our more serious off-roading trips. With the Ascent, we know we'll be limping out on the baby spare if we ever have to use it.
