Brake Replacement on ‘19 Causing Warning Lights

Hey all!

Just replaced pads and rotors on all 4 corners on our 2019 Ascent today. While the job went relatively smoothly, I’m now left with the following warning lights on in the vehicle : ABS, Traction Control, and BRAKE. When driving it also flashes PARK.

I am able to drive the vehicle with no issues aside from the Christmas tree on the dash. I bed the brakes in properly and then parked it due to said lights.

I followed the advice on previous threads and used an INNOVA 5510 diagnostics tool to put the EPB in and out of maintenance mode for this job. The tool now shows a B0400 error code in the ABS/VDC System, but I have yet to find any documentation as to what that is.

Any help here would be greatly appreciated!

any chance you unplugged one of the parking brake solenoids? seems like something was either damaged or unplugged. Did you try and clear the code and see what it does?

I unplugged both when I replaced the rear pads and rotors…could that be my mistake and it needs reset at the dealer?

I cleared the code with the 5510 but it comes right back.
did you exit EPB service mode with the tool after you replaced the pads?
That’s not a 100k pad… that’s a 100k pad backing 😳

What pads did you put on it? If they’re oem there’s no properly bedding them, it’s just driving without hard braking for 1000mi.

Did you check if the parking brake works, despite the lights/ warnings?

Yes.

You’re telling me… we bought the vehicle from the original owner with ~80k miles on it, so I’m guessing they never changed the brakes at all.

I opted for Powerstop pads and rotors all around. I performed the suggested bedding and they work fantastically well, compared to the braking we were getting before.

Car drives and brakes just fine, despite the warnings.

The only outlier issue I noticed when bedding the brakes was the speedometer took a little while of driving to start responding quickly to changes in acceleration/deceleration. I assumed this was simply the wheel speed sensors readjusting after both the brake job and the battery being disconnected.
Let us know if you fixed this or figured out the problem.

At the dealer now, should know when they get me info. Will update as I know more!

awesome.
Similar issue with the dash lights. 99k for mileage. put new pads (2nd time) and new rotors (1st time) on the front a few weeks ago, no issues. had to replace the rear pads and rotors this weekend. used the Innova 5610 to place into brake service mode and changed everything out no issues installing. used the caliper tool from Amazon (8MILELAKE Disc Brake Caliper Compressor Wind Back Tool 24pc Professional Disc Brake Caliper Tool Set) to compress the pistons, went in more straight like old school piston rather then rotating in but worked, and buttoned everything up. brought brakes back online compressing pedal slowly thinking that would release service mode. ended up with all the dash lights and couldn't get them to turn off. did test drive to seat brakes and did not notice any dragging on the brakes. had a trailing vehicle to verify brakes weren't over heating so I didn't burn my Ascent to the ground. set up a service appointment online that night for Monday 5/22 to fix my grounding recall. mentioned to them my Christmas tree lights on the dash and they stated they would look at it with a fee for troubleshooting. waited about an hour in the lobby before service advisor came out, recall was taken care of, and they were able to take the brakes out of service mode and all was good, and no charge by the dealer to boot.

Interesting….. so it seems to be the rears are just moody? Does your tool have the ability to take it out of service mode?
couldn't find an option in the 5610 to release service mode unfortunately. just received the 5610 unit Sunday AM and may have just missed it but I don't think so. may not be an option on the $300 tool versus the $1,000 tool as I saw on YouTube. there may be a way to "manually" release service mode but only found videos where they slowly compressed the pedal and held at pressure for a short time to release. that didn't work for me though.
I’m at 76k miles and have a pretty bad vibration; I ordered power stop pads and plan on doing this with ssm4; I’ll post how I fare.
Update:

Took the vehicle to the dealer, and same issue as above: the EPB wouldn’t remove itself from maintenance mode with the Innova 5510, even though it stated it had. Dealer reset the EPB and took it out of maintenance mode for a diagnostics fee.

Will likely be contacting Innova to get a direct update for my tool, but confident this is a worthwhile solution with no damage potential in the future.

Sounds more like the tool didn't do the recalibration and removal from service mode. That will light up the dash.

This was the exact issue. Will be addressing a potential software update to fix.

I tried the Innova 5510 and it would put the car into service mode but scrolling down in the screen the tool said it does not perform the reset function. Interestingly, Innova online customer support said the 5510 with the latest firmware (we confirmed it was) will do it but Innova phone customer service said no, definitely not. In fact, their website compatibility check confirmed it would not do the reset portion. I had a local shop use their fancier Autel tool and they were able to do the reset.

Now you say the 5610 doesn't do the reset, either. So I'd avoid the cheaper Innova tools and at least contact the company to make sure the tool you select will go both ways. Next brake job I'll try the more expensive Autel tool, looks like the model MK808s (on sale at Amazon right now for $407) should do it based on their website compatibility check, but I'll call them first.
