I bought my Limited in February, a stock Limited without option 23. The first two weeks I had it, I lost all the FM presets about 3 times and had problems with CarPlay not showing up or freezing. I met with the "Subaru Star Delivery Specialist" who said it was likely my head unit was not up to date and there was a new firmware release for it.

I wasted an hour or so one night verifying the head unit self-update feature just doesn't work on this head unit -- why it doesn't is a mystery, but I did verify the unit gets on my network and tries to contact a server on the internet. It's all encrypted traffic, so I don't know what actual data is being exchanged but it's really small.

I was annoyed that it wasn't updated prior to delivery and not wanting to go through the headache of making an appointment to do something that should have been done already, I emailed the dealership GM to complain about it. A couple days later I got a call from someone who said to come in at my convenience and they would just update it right away. They did this as promised.

CarPlay works better and the stations stuck around as expected. Until last night, I dropped a friend off and turned on the stereo to hear a weird hissing noise. The head unit had auto-switched to radio (last input was CarPlay and my phone wasn't plugged in) and was playing static because all my stations were blanked. Weirdly, none of the Sirius presets go away, just the ordinary FM ones -- but this is just like before.

My head unit displays "System Information: Software Version: Rel_U1.18.38.50".

My questions: Is this the latest firmware release for a stock (non-option 23) Ascent Limited head unit? Is there a release number known to not lose FM presets? I'd like to be able to go to the dealer with at least a release number if not some known Subaru bulletin ID that says what firmware should be on here.

I don't have any other problems with this car, so in the scheme of things it's not that big of a deal other than being visibly annoying, especially with the car's default behavior to play the radio when other last inputs aren't immediately available.

I will say it's super annoying not being able to do this update yourself. I'm sure the concern is that people will brick head units with wrong firmware, but this should be a non-issue. I work with equipment all the time with this risk and nearly all of it has failsafes against this -- cryptographic signatures that verify file integrity and validate the firmware is applicable to the model in question. It makes me wonder if these non-nav head units are actually nav capable, and the dealer control of the firmware is to prevent someone from hacking firmware files to create nav-enabled head units.

Not sure if we are having the same issue. My infotainment was locking up when I would try to do two things at once. Like the navigation was working, and I would try to choose a song on Apple play. Everything would lock up, couldn’t use any buttons , screen went blank. I would try turning the car on and off. Sometimes that would work. Took it to the dealer once for an update, then again to verify it was still doing the same thing. They replaced the infotainment system and all seems to be working. The only glitch in my Touring I bought in August.

I have the 8.0 non HK head unit in a Premium. I get the "hiss" sound. When it loses HD2 stations instead of just blanking out like most radios, it "hisses". Had it lock up a couple of times as well, but not lose the presets.

Interesting info, but the Touring head unit is different than the Limited head unit.

It's weird that the fix is total replacement of the head unit, though. I suppose there could be something like bad RAM or other not-exactly-dealer-level replacement fixes. Probably easier to bench it and fix it as a replacement unit at Subaru or Harmon than to expect the dealer.

Another minor (and perhaps related) issue I just dealt with. I went to make a call via Bluetooth and I got "handsfree loading..." with no status change about an hour ago.

Went and did the 10-second-press reset of the head unit and removed and re-added my phone back in, and at least that works right -- but of course now that blanked by radio presets I just reprogrammed this morning.

I got my car in december 8, 2018 w/ version Rel4.18.11.50 and the presets (FM and AM) would lose memory 3-4times until january 8,2019 w/ version Rel_U1.18.38.50, the same one you got now.

Since then to about March 8, 2019, my presets (FM and AM) were lost once. However, I did not lose the XM presets. It's hard to say if the firmware upgrade made the improvements or it was just some sort of fluke. It's not suppose to lose the presets unless we unplug the battery.

Hopefully, there will be a fix soon.
