My Ascent 19 was rear-ended this morning.
Hatch door, top part of bumper and bumper cover seem to be damaged. But there may be more than meets the eye! It is really hurtful, since I maintained the car quite well.

Request for some advice:
  1. Do Dealerships handle this kind of repair? Or are Collision/Auto Body Repair shops only option?
  2. Any recommended Collision Repair Shops in San Francisco Bay Area (South Bay)?
  3. Out of curiosity: would it be hatch door replacement or a repair?

Recommend looking at certified Subaru collision centers. My Forester goes into the shop tomorrow for repair here in Dallas. Good luck with your repair!

Sorry for what happened. I know the feeling because my car was rear ended too 4 months ago. Luckily, it was only a minor damage on the bumper.

Time for a new bike!

Sorry to hear everyone going through this, but sounds like no injuries. I think expensive repairs are worth the safety we get with modern vehicles!
Indeed. And I wish more vehicles come with Eyesight or something similar as standard equipment!

I got a preliminary estimate for from a Subaru approved collision repair shop. Whole bunch of things will be "removed and installed", liftgate will be repaired and spot painted and color matched, bumper will be replaced, nameplates will be replaced. Estimate is more than $5K. Needless to say it seems exorbitant and yet it is just the preliminary estimate.
To me bumper appeared fine. I was thinking it will be just slight straightening of the bottom part of liftgate.

Now I am in a dilemma: although the other party accepted fault, I am wondering if so much of 'fixing' is really worthwhile. A lot of the factory installed stuff will be removed and reinstalled. The bumper will be replaced with a repainted one, which I am sure will not be of the same quality as the original. A lot of the paint will be matched and evened out, which I presume will involved sanding and buffing, weathering the clear coat. My worry is a lot of gremlins may creep-up. Also, if the repair bill is above $750, I presume it will start showing on DMV or Carfax type record as an accident, reducing the value of the car.

If I don't get it repaired, I'll have to live with the slightly bent edge of the lift-gate, definitely hurtful esp. as it was not my fault, but so far without the other issues. Hopefully, the record for the car stays clear, although I'll lose some value due to the telltale sign of the bent edge.

Any advice or suggestions?

The issue with not getting it repaired includes additional hidden damage...as to diminished valuation, that can also be negotiated in many states.

Yeah, that is a tough call. It doesn't look too bad, certainly compared to the damage on mine. Jim is right though, you do not know what else might be below the surface.

The shop that I took mine to did a fantastic job and everything came back perfect. They guaranteed, in writing, all the work they did for the life of the vehicle. Fully transferable to any new owners. Doubt I will ever resell it(we tend to keep our Subies for 150-200k mi) still it is nice to have.

Our 19 was rear ended by a 20-seomthing girl in a Range Rover when we were at a stop sign in May 2021. It went to a dealer, not the one we bought it from, but a dealer who has a HUGE collision center. It was a little worse than yours and we have had no problems with it after the repair. It got a new lift gate, rear bumper and a few sensors.

That Range didn't even have a scratch though!
