SOA should have a “shakey hood” recall and install these .

 

After I made this thread it occurred to me I should have put it in the 'shakey hood' thread.

@COBB Tuning needs to make a deal with that company for a hood and Access Port package deal or at least work together on some cross marketing.

 

I simply love it,if only my wallet would agree I would purchase one tomorrow.This look to me would be like honoring the heritage of the STi performance division past & present.I believe it would definitely make our Ascents standout in a crowded market and be the envy of the group.
Toyota has a non- functioning scoop on their Tacomas ,while it looks good I say to myself...”why,it’s fake!”.Thats like putting a scoop on a Honda.If it serves a function fine ,if it don’t then leave it alone.There’s a reason why this company introduced this product...functionality & tradition.

Does the scoop make it more difficult to see over the front of the Ascent? That would be my only concern. That is one of the problems with the hood scoop on the Tacoma.

 

Q-Man13,did your Ascent have the shakey hood and if so did the swap make a difference?...or ,did you swap for asthetics?

It looks great, but the Ascent isn't really the kind of car that you would expect to see with a hood scoop. I'm surprised they targeted the Ascent for this kind of accessory.

 

Not surprised at all. If Ascent buyers have already been Subie owners, and life stage puts them in an Ascent, they've already been exposed to/part of the modifying culture around Subies. Look at how many of us change out the tires and wheels right away plus how popular chrome deletes are.

 

I'm skeptical it does anything significant for performance. The site says, "a more aggressive sports performance styled hood." So they claim his has performance style, not performance. I'd like to see data. A decent starting point would be to measure airflow through the IC at various road speeds compared to stock. Assuming it's greater, the next question is what the ECU makes of it.

It is probably more hail damage resistant that the aluminum hood...something to consider when/if mine gets dinged. I didn't see a price. How much for the CF version?

I too was very reluctant on the marketing, but then I noticed in the FAQ section that they stipulate an increase of 30hp at the wheels. That claim is specific enough for those that care. I am not in a position to evaluate it, but I assume that regardless of the air flow measurements if the hp at the wheels are increased by 30 before/after then that is what counts for performance. They do clearly state that they strongly recommend a tune up after the install to maximize the performance increase.

 

...and you have to get it painted once it arrives, right?

It's not ram engine induction. It only changes airflow through the intercooler and can only possibly increase power by improving induction cooling. Whether it improves or worsens that air flow/cooling remains to be seen.

And, as I mentioned, even if it does improve induction cooling in some circumstances, it's up to the ECU as to what effect that will have.

 

So what IS the the price of this incredibly awesome and amazing looking hood which I will buy regardless of whether or not it does anything besides look like the arm candy it probably is?

 

Couldn't agree more. The Ascent needs a little more mean look to it. I will buy one also even if it does nothing. The look says it all!

 

So a specific tuning is needed to work with the hood?
Makes sense since there would be more air entering the scoop which is located closer to the intercooler as well.Compared to the current OEM design in which the air enters the front of the grill through a much smaller opening then navigates the duct then onto the intercooler.

Looks like this is the same hood someone posted about in the 2019+ Subaru Ascent Owners FB page a while back. They're quite pricey or I would've dove right in with my rona money

 

$1,300 before shipping and painting.

 

If this hood was offered as an option I believe a whole bunch of us would have ordered it.

 

$1300 isn't bad. But the shipping and painting is gonna add another $1300

 

just paid for mine $1400 with shipping to Illinois. mine neighbor own body shop so paint and install wont be a big deal.....wonder how long it take for them to ship. can't wait....

i agree that i would have definitely selected this if it were a factory option. same with de-chroming the trim. oh well.

 

If you look under the hood now, the airflow is split 2 ways from an intake in the grill. Some goes to the air intake and some goes to the intercooler.

This would increase airflow probably to both, but whether the engine will take advantage of it would need to be tested.

Also, the decrease in aerodynamics will hurt above 50mph. CD definitely will go up a bit.

 

As long as it doesn’t hurt performance, I’d get one if I ever need a replacement after accident or hail damage. I like the look.

3 Subarus and all of them had the hood scoop…. So yeah, kind of a brand thing imo.

 

I know this thread is a couple of years old,(thanks for all the info) I pulled the trigger today on the LXT hood,intercooler screen and belt cover. I just purchased the new 2022 Limited, Magnetite Grey Metallic. I’m newly retired so I guess its a mid-life thingy, and making the car my own. I had a 97 Suburban and install a hood with the cowl and the beast looked tuff with it. So does the Ascent!
