I for one will not be a happy camper if Subaru decides to eliminate AM in their future headset units. Listen up Subaru.

I'm curious to see if this will make Apple open up a little bit to car manufacturers (and drop their licensing fees) in order to keep CP in vehicles. GM isn't the only one doing side deals with Google, 2023 Volvos have a similar system (but still support CP/AA)
subscriptions and financing is where the larger profit is made. buying and selling the hunk of metal is the smallest part of it. Service has continued to grow as a profit center.
I just heard Hyudai kia are planning on their software for features to generate 30% of their profit.

That is huge!! You can bet all that will be subscription based for guaranteed ongoing revenue.

I would like auto manufacturers to comeout now with policy promises on this topic.

GM is going with an all Android based system that will feature integral Google Maps, etc., and a complimentary 7 year subscription. That's nice for the mapping and the map I use, but I'm an Apple fanboi and prefer the integration I have across multiple devices. Not supporting CarPlay would be a show-stopper for me, but it's not an issue 'cause I'm unlikely to buy a GM product anyway. Of all the brands I've owned over many decades the only vehicles I ever had issues with outside of little minor things were GM products.

You have blinkers and probably don’t use those either. Should Subaru eliminate them ?

just because YOU don’t use something doesn’t mean others don’t. Bring back the cd player. Give us all the options. We will decide on what we use.

This is primarily affecting electric vehicles due to interference from the motors in the AM band. Should not affect those of us stodgy old farts who prefer gas and sometimes have gas. Extra cost of AM radio is prbably less than a dollar in the head unit plus $5 or so for the independent antenna. They can probably mitigate this interference issue with the prudent use of a few 47uF capacitors to suppress the interference.

It already has been shown that the interference excuse used by some EV manufacturers is not true. Other EV manufacturers have no problems.

Losing talk radio isn't a bug, it's a feature. :D
its a good thing you have choices. radio stations, ice cream flavors, paint colors. That was a creative line though.
Get off my lawn!

But seriously, I listen to one AM station but can also get it through their FM repeater and TuneIn. Times change and there are 1,000 other ways to listen to rabid political screeds these days. AM will be gone w/i 20 years, probably sooner.
It's like the New World Order tellin' us what the temperature is gonna be! Gotta go. There's a black helicopter landin' in my front yard! Don't say I didn't warn y'all this day was comin'.

yes, some AM content is also run on FM. That is fine for urban areas, but not so much for the more remote areas. FM has its limitations. We shall see what they come up with.
Ford has reversed course:

they will be keeping the AM receivers. Now it gets interesting to see what other manufacturers do.

In the news about this on TV this morning, they did mention that Tesla has not had AM radio for a long time now...

They may decide to bring it back the same reasons

At least they bring features back via OTA updates that actually work 😇😉

Yep, the HK/Tom Tom system of "updates" is sad. You need a Ph.D. in computer science and a Capt Midnite secret decoder ring to install a simple map update. C'mon guys, this is 2023 not 1983 (Do I need to DOS the unit first?). (n)

Maybe we should put the emm386 switch into the config.sys file 😂

I hope someone from SoA monitors this thread. Maybe they should include a 5.25" floppy drive in the head unit. The SoA map update debacle is an embarrassing fail compared to contemporary tech from Tesla and everyone else.

Too modern. I think the 8" floppy is a better match. :) :D

its funny how most of the update problems are in the navigation units. non-nav updates have been simple since i bought my ascent. you have to pay extra for the extra hassle of upgrading 🤣
