2nd Row Bench or Captains Chairs

Which would you choose?

I don’t know that we’d need the extra passenger space of 8 vs 7, and I kinda like the easier access to the third row between the Captains Chairs. Want to see in person how the load floor compares with the different 2nd row options and if there would be an easy way to bridge the gap left between the Captains Chairs when folded flat.

Also, if we were to go with the Touring model, that’s Captains Chairs only.

I believe the captains chairs is an option in the limited trim level as well.

Captains are optional on Premium and Limited. Standard on the Touring. The base is only available in 8 passenger bench seat, configuration.

I've got 3 kids with maybe a 4th in the next few years, but I won't even consider the bench seat. Its captains for sure. Ordering mine the very moment the orders open up. Crystal White Pearl with Black leather interior on the Limited Trim. I would go touring if it wasn't for the brown interior.
The advantage of the captain chairs is that the kids can get in the back by themselves. The ascent has pretty easy access to the 3rd row but my 7 year old was barely able to get the bench seats forward enough to get in the back. Then he pulled them back and I could imagine him squishing his 5 year old sister as she tried to get in the back with him. I ordered the 7 passenger without even a second thought.

I'm 6'1 200lbs and just climbed back into the 3rd row between the captain chairs a couple dozen times just fine. It would be nice if it was a little wider, but those captain chairs are very nice as is.
Did you actually sit in the back row for any length of time. Were your knees up in the air or were they pretty level? Do you think you sit back there for more than one hour?
I could have spent probably 30-45 minutes back there without complaining. Another hour or so if you want to listen to me complain.

Also, someone on here mentioned there is no 3D view for the navigation. That is false. It has the 3D View just like the outback.

I would put the car seats in the third row when there is a 2nd row bench. The only reason for me to do captains chairs in the 2nd row is to put car seats there or if it is an easier pass through (like a minivan.) So, no go on the 2nd row captain's seats for me. Sorry if I came off a bit hyperbolic but in the moment it just seemed like such a lost opportunity on Subaru's part. I do understand that not everyone has the same needs or kids at the same stage.
Have you ever had car seats in the 3rd row? Its a pain in the butt always climbing back there to buckle them in. But surprisingly I have had a few people want to order the touring trim with 8 seats...
I'm a big fan of the captain's chairs myself. I find them to be more comfortable for riding longer distances and coupled with the moon roof, make the backseat feel huge. We only have one child so we typically take turns sitting in the back with him on long trips to keep him entertained and to pick up dropped toys (because you know it happens a lot!). It will be so much nicer to have my own comfy, reclining seat for trips.

We have only had our Ascent a little over a week but have left the 3rd row up all the time except for loading groceries in. 90% of the time it will just be 3-4 people riding in the car at a time but having the 3rd row accessible will be nice when we want to pack 2 cars of people into 1 car.

I often sit in the second row captain chair's myself. We put my 6 and 8 year old in the 3rd row. My 3 year old is in her car seat behind the passenger. I sit next to her, reclined back with my feet up over the arm rest in the front! Its the best! Enjoying a juice box and gold fish crackers in luxury baby!!

I started a thread on the topic, and there's lots of talk about the pros and cons of both, but no one has any real insight into why Subaru made the decision, especially as it impacts what are arguably safety features in the form of the smart rear view mirror, and front facing camera. I have no issue with reserving colours or materials to particular trim levels, and even 'luxury' features like the ventilated seats, but at least give people an option to get all the safety tech on their 8 seater!!!

Here is the exact answer why:

"Subaru studied the sales numbers of competitive cars and found they sold very few highest trim models with a bench seat."

Sure, they sold a few and they may offer it in future models, but as of right now. They don't need to.
