Less than 250 miles on our new Ascent and we've already banged it up. The wife accidentally triggered the garage door while reaching for something else in the cubby. Just happened to be while backing out and the door clipped off the fin antenna. I don't blame here. It was an honest mistake that could have just as easily happened to me and she has now moved the remote.

The damage does not seem too bad, but I have no idea how much it will cost. The are a few scuffs, but being on the roof I expect we will ignore them. For the rest, I think the roof metal just needs to be straightened out and the necessary parts replaced. The labor will be the worst part. I'm thinking they will probably need to drop the headliner to get at the necessary sections which sucks. Anyone with knowledge that can say what we might be in for?

Assuming the parts are the same as the 2022 (2023 doesn't show up in the system yet), then they are not that expensive. Only $60 or so. The big question is can they properly bend the sheet metal for the mounting to be flush. It would REALLY suck if they had to replace the roof.

It seems like this is a part that would be smart to have a designed sheer to prevent damage to the roof sheet metal. Oh well. Nothing we can do about that now.

Oof! Sorry about that. I am always so afraid of opening my liftgate by mistake in the wrong place. I will be removing my garage remote from my car when I get home now thanks to your post. Just going to rely on Homelink. I do carry an actual house key also. I hope that's not too expensive for you.

When the incident happened the remote was in the cubby under the main display. We have now moved it to the cubby to the left of the steering wheel. That is one place where the Ascent destroys my Forester. TONS of storage cubbies. My Forester is horrible about that.

Congrats on possibly being the first with a damaged Ascent. Hows the roof sheet metal? As @packout mentioned the pdr may be able to help if there are any dents around that area, but its a big flat piece of sheet metal so any creases may still stand out. But again, its on the roof, out of sight, so it may even be something you could live with.

Yes I love all the little cubbies this car has! I have my remote inside the center armrest console, but I honestly don't need it in my car at all. My Homelink has never failed and if it ever does I'll use my house key.
I have a lot of issues with the Homelink on my forester. It works, but it is VERY easily blocked and I have a very hard time getting it to work while in the driveway. Hopefully the Ascent won't have this problem as it is VERY annoying.

Care to explain? I don't know what you are referring to.

@xydadx3 Yeah, we just care about it getting a flush application of the antenna. I don't care if it is not perfect underneath it. Also there are some scuffs on the roof we probably won't bother repairing perfectly.

Paintless dent repair may be able to pull put dents to bring back to pre- accident. Inexpensive.

(color my emphasis)

Yes on steel panels. No on aluminum panels, if they will do it at all. I found this out the hard way this past week when I inquired about getting some storm damage removed from our Forester's hood. Three times the cost for aluminum which pretty much makes just replacing the hood skin less expensive, depending on the particulars.

Wow! That could be a great solution. If I could get someone to simply repair the metal, I could probably do the rest myself without much issue. Biggest unknown would be figuring out how to appropriately seal it. Also will suck to drop the ceiling, but I think I could do it with only dropping the back section.

Thanks guys! I'll definitely look into that this weekend.

We just hooked up the Ascent over the weekend with a brand new opener and no problems so far. It also connected to our other garage bay which is a different opener brand. Seems solid.
