Set to make its grand entrance at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show this month, Motor Authority’s spy photographers caught a camouflaged 2019 Subaru Ascent prototype being tested ahead of its official debut.

We first saw the three-row SUV’s concept back in 2016 at the LA auto show. Called the Viziv-7 concept car, it had sharp lines in spades though the exterior styling was toned down in the Ascent prototype that was on display at this year’s New York auto show. Now it seems like Subaru has taken an even safer route with the production model Ascent.

Though the Ascent’s final design may not stand out, its sheer size will make it more noticeable. Maybe it’s the angle, but the Ascent test mule looks to have the proportions of a Wagon instead of an SUV, but this is to be expected. The car will need to fit seven seats comfortably whilst providing owners with a good amount of cargo space.

Getting the Subaru Global modular platform moving is a new 2.4-liter turbocharged Boxer engine. We don’t know the exact specs of this unit, but we do know it’ll feature direct injection and four-wheel drive. Maybe it’ll be offered with a CVT, though we won’t know for sure until it debuts on the 29th this month.
